ⓘ 'Brewsterite Subgroup' ?
Description: Cooper & Stanley (1990): "The 'brewsterite' recorded by Hall (1868) as an associate of tenorite and chalcopyrite is unlikely to be the zeolitic brewsterite (of Brooke) as assumed by Young (1987). It is more likely to be the 'brewsterite' listed by Branston (1910) and Postlethwaite (1913) as 'protoxide of copper'. Although the latter is a synonym of cuprite, the name brewsterite in this context does not appear in any standard mineralogy or synonymy known to the authors and the precise definition of the term appears to be lost."

Formula: (Pb,Ca)CuAsO4(OH)
Description: Cooper & Stanley (1990): Kingsbury & Hartley claimed that material they had collected resembled, but was not identical with duftite was actually an intermediate between duftite and conichalcite. They coined the term 'calcio-duftite' for this mineral on the basis of the intermediate nature of the x-ray powder spacings and a qualitative (spectrographic) analysis that showed significant calcium. Claringbull also mentioned the affinity of the x-ray pattern of Brandy Gill duftite with conichalcite and commented on the variation of refractive index within individual spherules of the mineral which, he suggested, resulted from a corresponding variation in composition with the core being richer in lead than the outer areas.

Infra-red absorption spectrophotometry readily distinguishes α- and ÎČ-duftite and also shows the predominance of the latter at this locality (R.S.W. Braithwaite, pers. comm.)."

Description: Kingsbury reference. Kingsbury (1965): "For many years the bismuth telluride tetradymite (Bi2T2S) has been accepted as a British species, but this status has never been satisfactorily established. It was originally thought to occur in Brandy Gill, Carrock Fell, Cumberland, though in 1858 Greg and Lettsom had stated that the mineral appeared to differ much in composition from other tetradymites. The Carrock mineral was later regarded as a new species and was named grĂŒnlingite, but further investigations have shown that these specimens are not all identical and probably represent several varieties or phases of the allied mineral josĂ©ite, with compositions near Bi4TeS2: none of them, so far, have proved to be tetradymite."

Description: Kingsbury reference. Cooper & Stanley (1990): "The first (and only) British occurrence (Kingsbury & Hartley, 1955). The mineral was found in specimens from the dumps of the eastern level as small (< 1.5mm), dark olive-green bladed crystals on a yellowish-green crystalline mineral (which 'gives [an x-ray powder] pattern and spacings very close to those of the well-known pale blue Cumberland plumbogummite' op. cit.: 724.) It was found in cavities in granophyre presumed to be from the vein wall. Only a few specimens were obtained (Kingsbury and Russell Collections, BM(NH)) and, despite the exertions of a generation of collectors, none has been found since."

Habit: minute platy crystals
Colour: vivid yellow.
Description: It occurs as patchy, vivid yellow efflorescent crusts coating areas up to 1.5 m across of the lowest two sandstone beds exposed in the quarry. Individual crusts, which are up to 10 cm across and 0.5 mm thick, consist of rounded aggregates up to 1 mm across composed of minute platy crystals. The two sandstone beds are separated by a 25 mm thick dark grey carbonaceous mudstone parting. In places small patches of metavoltine encrust this parting, or are concentrated on the sandstone within 10 cm above or below this level. Oxidation of pyrite within the mudstone parting together with diffusion of sulphate-rich fluids through the surface layers of the adjacent very porous sandstone have almost certainly provided the source of the metavoltine. a
