A lamprophyre containing phenocrysts of phlogopite-biotite and occasionally amphibole in a groundmass of the same minerals plus orthoclase and minor plagioclase. Mg-olivine and diopsidic pyroxene may also be present.
It is a hypabyssal igneous rock characterised by abundant biotite phenocrysts and/ or groundmass, lacking felsic phenocrysts, usually occurring in dykes.
The name is also used in a France and Germany for oolitic ironstones, see Minette (ore).

Mineralogy of Minette
Essential minerals - these are minerals that are required within the classification of this rock:
| Feldspar > Alkali Feldspar > K Feldspar | Potassium-dominant feldspars with variable crystal symmetry and Al-Si ordering state; they are a subgroup of ... |
| Mica > Biotite | K(Fe2+/Mg)2(Al/Fe3+/Mg/Ti)([Si/Al/Fe]2Si2O10)(OH/F)2 |
Non-essential minerals - these minerals are common, sometimes major components, but are not always present:
| Amphibole | (Na, K, ◻)(Ca,Na)2(Mg,Fe,Al)5((Si,Al)8O22)(OH,F,Cl,O)2 |
| Feldspar > Plagioclase | (Na,Ca)[(Si,Al)AlSi2]O8 |
