A mountainous area west of the middle Rhine valley and north of the valley of the Mosel river, extending into Belgium.

Although the geology is dominated by Devonian slates, sandstones, and limestones, the Eifel is mainly known for its numerous localities in volcanic rocks of Tertiary or Quaternary age; they are situated in the German part.

The Earth's crust in the Eifel area still shows volcanic and tectonic activity: the area is lifted 1-2 mm each year.
