Name:
For its relationship to kaersutite.
Type Locality:
Ferri-kaersutite is a member of the kaersutite root-name group within the w(O)-dominant amphiboles. It is closely related to kaersutite and other Ti-rich calcic amphiboles, and many literature references to âkaersutiteâ may include material that would today (after 2012) be classified as ferri-kaersutite. The distinction is not always made in older or less detailed studies, partly because identification depends on reliable handling of FeÂČâș/FeÂłâș and O/OH relationships.
Ferri-kaersutite occurs in the same broad geological environments as kaersutite: alkaline volcanic rocks, gabbros, volcanic ejecta and related alkaline magmatic settings. The occurnce as dark brown to black prismatic microcrystals in vugs in lava xenoliths in the volcanic Eifel area of Germany, where it has been identified by EMPA and SXRD, is noteworthy. This vug occurrence is unusual for a kaersutite-group mineral and may reflect stabilisation by fluorine at relatively low pressure-temperature conditions.
As with other oxo-amphiboles, identification of ferri-kaersutite should be treated with caution unless supported by suitable analytical data. EMPA is commonly used and is generally accepted, but it does not directly determine H, the O/OH ratio, or the FeÂČâș/FeÂłâș ratio. These factors are critical for distinguishing ferri-kaersutite from kaersutite, ferro-kaersutite, and neighbouring Ti-rich pargasite-, hastingsite-, oxo-pargasite- and oxo-hastingsite-root-name compositions. High Ti content may indicate kaersutitic affinity, but individual specimens require analysis for confident species-level identification.
A fluorine-dominant analogue is known: 'Unnamed (F-dominant analogue of ferri-kaersutite)'.

NaCa2(Mg3Fe3+Ti4+)(Si6Al2)O22O2
Approval year:
2014
Approval history:
Ferri-kaersutite was originally described from the Deeti volcanic cone, Gregory Rift, Rift Valley Province, Kenya (IMA2011-035). This material was later renamed Oxo-magnesio-hastingsite by Zaitsev et al.(2013) as a consequence of changed definitions in the 2012 amphibole nomenclature report. Ferri-kaersutite was published from Harrow Peaks, Victoria Land, Eastern Antarctica, Antarctica by Gentili et al. (2016, IMA 2014-051).
The chemical formula of kaersutite has been changed in the 2012 amphibole nomenclature from NaCa2(Mg4Ti)(Al2Si6O22)(OH)O to NaCa2(Mg3AlTi}(Al2Si6O22)O2 thus adding WO > 1.0 apfu to the CTi > 0.5 apfu requirement to the definition of the mineral, and increasing the limit for O content.
