Snowdonia National Park (Welsh: Parc Cenedlaethol Eryri) is a protected upland area in north-west Wales, UK, covering approximately 2,130 km². It encompasses the highest and most rugged terrain in Wales, including Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) at 1,085 m, along with a landscape of sharp peaks, deep valleys, cwms, lakes, and extensive upland plateaux. The park extends from mountainous interiors to coastal lowlands and estuaries, with drainage dominated by short, steep rivers flowing toward the Irish Sea. The climate is cool and wet, with strong maritime influence and high rainfall at elevation.
Geologically, Snowdonia is dominated by Lower Palaeozoic rocks, principally Ordovician volcanic and sedimentary sequences formed in a complex marine and volcanic arc setting. Thick successions of rhyolitic and andesitic lavas, ash-flow tuffs, and volcanic breccias are interbedded with mudstones and sandstones, all strongly folded and cleaved during the Caledonian orogeny. Later intrusions and extensive faulting further complicated the structure. The region was heavily modified by Quaternary glaciation, which carved classic U-shaped valleys, cirques, arêtes, and rock basins now occupied by lakes such as Llyn Llydaw and Llyn Idwal.
Snowdonia has a notable mineral and extractive history, dominated by slate quarrying, which reached industrial scale during the 18th and 19th centuries. Slate was worked extensively from Ordovician mudstones and tuffs, producing roofing slate exported worldwide from quarries such as Penrhyn, Dinorwig, and Nantlle. Smaller-scale mining for copper, lead, zinc, and locally gold occurred in several districts, associated with hydrothermal veins cutting volcanic and sedimentary rocks. While large-scale extraction has ceased, abandoned quarries, mine workings, and spoil tips remain prominent features of the Snowdonian landscape.

Geochronology
Mineralization age: Silurian : 438 ± 4 MaImportant note: This table is based only on rock and mineral ages recorded on mindat.org for this locality and is not necessarily a complete representation of the geochronology, but does give an indication of possible mineralization events relevant to this locality. As more age information is added this table may expand in the future. A break in the table simply indicates a lack of data entered here, not necessarily a break in the geologic sequence. Grey background entries are from different, related, localities.
