New Haven County is located in south-central Connecticut, USA, extending from the Long Island Sound coastline northward into the central lowlands and eastward and westward into the uplands of eastern and western Connecticut. The county includes a varied landscape of coastal lowlands, river valleys, rolling hills, and ridges, with the Housatonic, Quinnipiac, and Naugatuck rivers as major drainage systems. Coastal areas feature tidal marshes and estuaries, while inland terrain rises gradually toward the Appalachian uplands.
Geologically, New Haven County spans two major geological provinces. Much of the central and eastern county lies within the Hartford Basin, part of the Mesozoic Newark Supergroup, composed of Triassic–Jurassic red sandstones, siltstones, shales, and basalt lava flows formed during early rifting of Pangaea. The lava flows and diabase intrusions form distinctive ridges such as East Rock and West Rock, the Metacomet Ridge and the Hanging Hills in the central part of the county. Western and eastern portions of the county expose older Proterozoic and Paleozoic metamorphic rocks, including gneiss, schist, and granitic intrusions, created during multiple Appalachian orogenic events such as the Paleaozoic Taconic, Salinic, Acadian and Alleghenian Orogenies. Pleistocene glaciation left behind widespread till, lake sediments, outwash delta deposits, and drumlins.
Mineral resources in New Haven County has focused mainly on aggregate production since the first rock-crushing machine was invented and put to use in New Haven in 1857. Traprock is extensively quarried for aggregate and clay deposits supported brick-making. Quarrying of gneiss and granite for aggregate and dimension stone was and is ongoing. Barite mining took place in Cheshire in the 19th century and pegmatite mining for feldspar, mica, quartz and beryllium was active in the 20th century.

ⓘ Actinolite Formula: ◻Ca2(Mg4.5-2.5Fe0.5-2.5)Si8O22(OH)2
ⓘ Albite Formula: Na(AlSi3O8) Localities: Reported from at least 17 localities in this region. Habit: tabular micros twinned once down the center Colour: colorless to white Description: Very unusual for traprock, the micro crystals form a druse lining some voids and are clear and tabular with a single twin plane down the center, parallel to the tabular habit.
ⓘ Albite var. Oligoclase Formula: (Na,Ca)[Al(Si,Al)Si2O8]
ⓘ Allophane Formula: (Al2O3)(SiO2)1.3-2 · 2.5-3H2O
ⓘ Almandine Formula: Fe2+3Al2(SiO4)3 Localities: Reported from at least 15 localities in this region.
ⓘ 'Almandine-Pyrope Series var. Rhodolite' ? Formula: Mg3Al2(SiO4)3 Habit: Dodecahedral Colour: Red, purple Description: Color is not diagnostic for garnet species. Needs chemical analysis to confirm, pyrope is not confirmed in Connecticut and is unlikely because it is found mostly in Mg-rich deep crustal igneous rocks and as grains rather than crystals. These crystals are probably almandine, which is extremely common in schists, though they may have a significant Mg component. The term "rhodolite" refers originally a rose-red gem variety of pyrope. Current usage has extended the name to any pink garnet in the almandine-pyrope series with most of the occurrences in the almandine compositional field. References:
