Wrexham is a county borough in north-east Wales, UK, located on the border with England and forming part of the lowland corridor between the Welsh uplands and the Cheshire Plain. The area is characterised by gently rolling countryside, river valleys—most notably the River Dee to the north—and more elevated ground toward the west where the foothills of the Welsh uplands begin. The climate is temperate and relatively drier than western Wales, reflecting its more sheltered, inland position.
Geologically, Wrexham lies at the transition between the Welsh Massif and the Cheshire Basin. The eastern and northern parts of the county borough are underlain by Carboniferous limestones, sandstones, and coal measures, while older Silurian mudstones and siltstones occur toward the west. The Carboniferous strata host important coal-bearing sequences and associated sedimentary units, as well as limestone horizons that have been quarried for building stone and lime. Structural controls, including faulting, played a key role in local basin development and mineralisation.
Wrexham has a notable industrial and extractive history, particularly associated with the North Wales Coalfield, which supported extensive coal mining from the 18th to the 20th centuries. Coal, ironstone, and fireclay were major resources, underpinning the development of ironworks and later heavy industry in the area. Administratively, modern Wrexham largely corresponds to the eastern part of the historic county of Denbighshire; it became a unitary authority in 1996 following the dissolution of Clwyd, and Mindat locality usage follows the current county borough boundaries rather than historic administrative extents.
