Since the Middle Ages, or perhaps even earlier, there has been metal mining in this region. This concerns especially iron, zinc, and lead.

The two most active zinc mines were Plombières (Bleyberg) in Plombières and Altenberg (Vieille Montagne) in Kelmis (La Calamine).

— The zinc mine and the smelter in Plombières (Bleyberg) were owned by Peñarroya.
— The zinc mine Altenberg (Vieille Montagne) was the heart of the Vieille Montagne concession. In Kelmis (La Calamine) at the Altenberg zinc mine, there was also a zinc smelter plant. Around this mine with a processing plant, the VM-zinc-lead-concession has grown and expanded by a network of mines in Kelmis, Lontzen, and Welkenraedt.

Moresnet is only a small village north of the Vieille Montagne (Altenberg) mine. This explains why the name "Moresnet" is always used for the Altenberg mine, as well as the zinc plant and the mining concession area of VM.

"Moresnet" gradually became synonymous with zinc mining in East Belgium.

Later, the town of Kelmis (La Calamine) formed around the zinc mine Altenberg.

The name Moresnet is like an "appellation d'origine contrôlée". The name was used for every zinc mine-related activity of Vieille Montagne.

For more than a century, Prussia and (what was to become) the Netherlands could not agree on how to divide the wealth of the Altenberg mine. As a result of this disagreement, the mine was an independent state (“Neutral-Moresnet”) for more than a century (1816-1918).

This explains the use of the different names.

NOTE: For references, see (currently) the Moresnet page.

ⓘ Wurtzite
Formula: (Zn,Fe)S
ⓘ Wurtzite var. Voltzite ?
Formula: (Zn,Fe,Mn) S [with O C H ]
Habit: botryoidal globules on quartz crystals
Colour: Yellowish brown
Description: Mélon et al. (1976): "In the collections of the University of Liège, a specimen originating from the Bleiberg and described by Buttgenbach (1921) carries the name of "voltzine". The mineral is in the form of small botryoidal globules covering quartz crystals. Light yellowish brown, these globules, with a density of 3.79, scratching fluorite, show a concentric texture with accumulation of small golden yellow scales in very weakly birefringent thin scales. They fall apart in the closed tube and are soluble with effervescence in hydrochloric acid. The X-ray study, recently done by Fransolet, reveals a diffuse powder diagram; the size of the rays does not permit precise measurements, but the distances found are close enough to those of the powder diagram of sphalerite. Voltzite: 3.08 2.64 1.91 1.61 1.34 1.23 Å Sphalerite: 3.12 2.70 1.91 1.63 1.35 1.24 Å The look of the diagram and the similarity with sphalerite recall the observations of Fournet (1833) and Frondel (1967) on voltzites from Sterling Hill (New Jersey) and from Roisiers (Puy-de-Dôme). These two authors have shown, on the other hand, that voltzite is just a mixture of sphalerite with an organometallic compound of zinc, resulting from the precipitation of a gel."
ⓘ 'Wurtzite-2H'
Formula: (Zn,Fe)S
ⓘ 'Wurtzite-4H'
Formula: ZnS
ⓘ Zaccagnaite
Formula: Zn4Al2(OH)12[CO3] · 3H2O
ⓘ Zincite
Formula: ZnO
