El Potosรญ Mine
Name(s) in local language(s):
Mina El Potosรญ

Currently owned and operated by Minerales Nacionales de Mรฉxico S.A. (Mina Mex), the Potosรญ Mine is a lead-silver-zinc mine located in the West Camp of the Santa Eulalia District. The main minerals extracted from it are galena, silver, and sphalerite, with minor chalcopyrite (for copper). The waste material primarily consists of quartz, limonite, and ilvaite.

The orebody at this mine has a chimney shape, but its specific dimensions are unknown. Three types of ore are recognised in the West Camp โ€˜mantosโ€™ (Spanish for blankets) and chimneys (also known as pipes). These are:

* The earliest, a complex and rare silicate gangue carrying a silver-bearing iron sulphide and insignificant amounts of galena and sphalerite. This type is of limited extent and commercial importance. Distinctive calc-iron-silicate skarn bodies, composed of manganoan fayalite, manganoan hedenbergite, chlorite, ilvaite, quartz, and rhodochrosite, with sulphides, lie within or above some massive sulphide bodies.

* The main lead-silver-zinc ore at Santa Eulalia. This assemblage comprises the main massive sulphide mineralisation and consists of a fine- to coarse-grained mixture of pyrrhotite, pyrite, sphalerite, and galena, with minor chalcopyrite. Pyrrhotite is dominant at depth, with pyrite becoming more important in the upper levels. Gangue minerals include fluorite, quartz, and carbonates.

* The latest phase, composed chiefly of galena or its oxidation products. It is relatively free of zinc and only contains minor amounts of iron.

Notes:

โ€” The orebodies are called either mantos or chimneys, depending on their overall morphology and relationship to the near-horizontal carbonate host beds. Mantos are roughly horizontal, stratabound, but not stratiform, orebodies of either elongate tubular shape or broad tabular shape (bedding replacements). Chimneys are steeply inclined to vertical, of tubular elongate shape, strongly discordant orebodies or tabular vein-like habit (replacement veins).

โ€” All the rhodochrosite from the West Camp of the Santa Eulalia District comes from the Potosรญ Mine (Mina El Potosรญ). Except for some pale material from the A-10 or Inglaterra Orebody (NOT Condesa), all the good rhodochrosite from the district comes from the main silicate orebody, which extends from between the 8th and 9th levels down to the 11th level of the mine. Principal access to the orebody was on the 10th level.

โ€” The main silicate orebody is an unusual calcic-iron skarn body composed of a prograde assemblage of finely banded manganoan hedenbergite and manganoan fayalite that, on retrograde alteration (hydration), was altered to chlorite (clinochlore and cronstedtite), quartz, ilvaite, and rhodochrosite. The retrograde event generated abundant voids into which rhodochrosite, fluorite, hรผbnerite, quartz, and abundant rare species grew.

โ€” The rhodochrosite from this orebody shows a bewildering range of habits, from pale pink botryoidal crusts (often on glassy hisingerite, which gets misidentified as a wide range of species, including coal (!)) through simple rhombohedra to complex elongate scalenohedra with rhombohedral terminations. Typically, the more elongate habits are gemmier.

โ€” There are a number of other calcic-iron skarn bodies in the West Camp, but only the A-10/Inglaterra Orebody has any decently crystallized rhodochrosite.
(Ref.: Panczner (1987): 150, 210, 220.)

โ€” Panczner distinguishes between this mine and a Potosรญ mine at Aquiles Serdรกn. However, there is only one Potosรญ Mine at Santa Eulalia. It sits at the small miners' community of Francisco Portillo, which is more properly considered a neighbourhood of the town of Aquiles Serdรกn (formerly Santa Eulalia), which is the governmental seat of the Municipio of Aquiles Serdรกn. [pers. comm., Kevin Conroy, 2017].

โ€” The correct name of the town seems to be Santo Domingo (Francisco Portillo) (see: https://www.micodigopostal.mx/chihuahua/aquiles-serdan/santo-domingo-francisco-portillo/) and the nearby town is also still Santa Eulalia (see: https://en.mexico.pueblosamerica.com/chihuahua/aquiles-serdan/).
