Other/historical names associated with this locality:
Old Toms Quarry; Tom's Phosphate quarry

An active open-pit phosphate mine. Phosphates have formed from the breakdown of fluorapatite in the presence of acidic Fe- and Al-bearing solutions.

The following are notes from the SARIG Mineral Deposit Information database regarding the names "Tom's quarry" and "Sobey mine":

Tom's quarry: "It lies adjacent to Sobey Mine, which is basically part of the same deposit, with a separate record created in MINDEP based only on the classification presented in the historic unpublished Mine Summary card database."

Tom's quarry (Tom's Phosphate quarry) was worked by the Clutterbuck Brothers, but the deposit itself does not appear to have been known by Clutterbuck Bros. and PM 315 relates to this deposit.

Sobeys mine: "The deposit was discovered in 1904, and during the next few years only a small amount of work was done. In 1941, it was worked in association with the adjoining Toms Quarry."

This deposit was worked on by BHP Ltd., and MI 4993 relates to this deposit.

PM 315 and ML 4993 are the current tenements for these two locations; the operations name on each is listed as "Tom's phosphate mine". Both are operated by the same individual, although the tenements have separate owners.

In communications between Mark Willoughby and Vince Peisley on 6 December 2012, Vince stated: "Tom's quarry and Old Tom's quarry are the only two names this deposit has been known by, regardless of what the SARIG mineral deposit information says. The Sobey mine consisted of a shaft some two hundred metres to the east and is now filled in. This information was given to me by a miner who worked there as a teenager in 1941. Clutterbuck Bros and BHP were leaseholders, not quarry names."

Vince is considered locally to be one of the foremost experts regarding rock phosphate deposits in South Australia.
