Los Camarones

NOTE: The locality name may be erroneously spelled Los Camerones.
Actually the Cuya village is situated in a narrow valley of the Camarones valley. The area has been exploited as small scale sulphate outcrops and diggings. Local lithology is composed by lavas, lithic tuffs, and probably sedimentary marine rocks. These rocks have been cut by faults and submitted to metamorphism that have generated the strong pyrite alteration body over the whole area; pyrite mineralization is related to some of those sedimentary and shale rocks, such as crystalline calcareous shales. A strong epidote alteration process also may be seen through the veins and layer of the area. Pyrite is the main sulphide, which seems to be accompanied with variable amounts of As-pyrite, and less chalcopyrite that is also present at surface, together with very few spots of secondary copper minerals. Former mentioned sulphides, must have suffered oxidation near surface, due to meteoric water.

Many thanks to Tony Kampf of LAC Mineralogical Museum, for his invaluable work on the most of the minerals hereby listed.
