Extends over an area of 50 km2. The lithologies surrounding the Huayangchuan deposit mainly comprise the gneiss of the Taihua Group, the Proterozoic Xiaohe granitoids and granitic porphyry, and Mesozoic granitoids with some Paleoproterozoic pegmatite dikes, carbonatites, and mafic rocks. The Taihua Group in the Huayangchuan deposit contains amphibole-plagioclase gneiss, plagioclase gneiss, biotite-plagioclase gneiss, granitic gneiss, amphibole-gneiss, and migmatite.

The mineralization of uranium, niobium, and REEs in the Huayangchuan deposit is most closely related to carbonatite rocks, which are mostly in the form of irregular network veins, lenses, or dendrites. The mineral resources (e.g., U, Nb, REE, Ba, and Sr; excluding Pb) are mostly associated with or hosted in carbonatite dikes. The mineralization usually presents as dissemination in carbonatites or contact zones between carbonatite dikes and wall rocks. These ore-bearing veins along the brittle fracture intruded the basement rocks of the Archeanโ€“Paleoproterozoic Taihua Group, Paleoproterozoic Xiongโ€™er Group, Proterozoic granite pegmatite, and monzonite granite. Carbonatite rocks in the Huayangchuan deposit are widely developed with varying degrees of typical wall rock alteration, including fenitization, silicitization, biotitization, chloritization, and actinolitization. According to the paragenetic association of the altered minerals, carbonatite veins can be roughly divided into three types: light-colored quartzโ€“calcite veins, aegirineโ€“biotite quartzโ€“calcite ore-bearing veins, and zeolite-bearing quartzโ€“calcite veins. The mineralization zonation at Huayangchuan commonly occurs as veinlets and (locally) stockworks in the carbonatite dykes. Over 40 ore and gangue minerals were identified at Huayangchuan.

The carbonatite mineralization can be divided into three substages, i.e., sulfate (Baโ€“Sr), alkali-rich U, and REE-U mineralization. Sulfate assemblages (barite-celestite โ€‹+ โ€‹calcite โ€‹+ โ€‹phlogopite โ€‹+ โ€‹yellowish barite-celestite) commonly occur as aggregates. The alkali-rich U assemblage contains pyrochlore (red coarse-grained euhedral) โ€‹+ โ€‹calcite โ€‹+ โ€‹aegirine-augite โ€‹+ โ€‹titanite โ€‹+ โ€‹apatite โ€‹ยฑ โ€‹quartz โ€‹ยฑ โ€‹magnetite โ€‹ยฑ โ€‹microcline โ€‹ยฑ โ€‹amphibole โ€‹ยฑ โ€‹(galena โ€‹+ โ€‹pyrite). REE-U mineral assemblage contains pyrochlore (medium-fine grained) โ€‹+ โ€‹calcite โ€‹+ โ€‹monazite โ€‹+ โ€‹allanite โ€‹+ โ€‹phlogopite โ€‹ยฑ โ€‹biotite โ€‹ยฑ โ€‹molybdenite, and commonly occurs as crumb or aggregates.

The Huayangchuan Uโ€“Nbโ€“REE deposit, located in the northern QOB, contains distinctive Nb and REE mineralization, with estimated resources of 111 kt Nb at 0.019 % and 550 kt REE at 0.085 %. Most ore bodies are hosted by carbonatite dykes derived from carbonatitic precursors that intrude the Archeanโ€“Paleoproterozoic Taihua Group. The Taihua Group TTG gneiss is the oldest crystalline basement (2.6โ€“2.2 Ga) in the Huayangchuan district. The ore-bearing carbonatite dikes are mainly localized along the NW-SE trending tensional faults and the associated secondary fractures. The ore bodies are developed as veins, stockworks, and lenticular bodies, extending for approximately 2650 m from Yangyugou in the northwest to Liujiagou in the southeast, with strike directions of 120ยฐโ€“130ยฐ. Over the exposed elevation interval of 1450โ€“750 m a.s.l., these ore bodies show a steep northwestward attitude, with dips mostly ranging from 60ยฐ to 70ยฐ. Petrographic observations indicate the presence of two carbonatite types in the Huayangchuan Uโ€“Nbโ€“Pb deposit. Both showing extensive signs of overprinting and post-magmatic features: Type I (calcite + aegirine-augite + quartz + uranopyrochlore ยฑ feldspar) and Type II (calcite + quartz + barite + galena ยฑ zeolite) carbonatite.

Geochronology

Mineralization age: Early Jurassic : 181 Ma

Important note: This table is based only on rock and mineral ages recorded on mindat.org for this locality and is not necessarily a complete representation of the geochronology, but does give an indication of possible mineralization events relevant to this locality. As more age information is added this table may expand in the future. A break in the table simply indicates a lack of data entered here, not necessarily a break in the geologic sequence. Grey background entries are from different, related, localities.
