AWS changes three of its exams before 2026 is out, and the study books for most of them have not caught up. Solutions Architect Professional moves from SAP-C02 to SAP-C03 on November 17, Developer Associate moves from DVA-C02 to DVA-C03 on December 1, and Advanced Networking Specialty retires after December 31. Security Specialty already switched to SCS-C03 last December, and the major publishers still have no book for it. If you buy AWS certification books by star rating, you can end up studying for a code you can no longer book.

This guide goes exam by exam. For every current AWS certification, it names the book worth buying, or says that none is worth buying yet and what to use instead. Seven books made the cut across six exams. We checked every exam code, retirement date and book edition against AWS’s exam guides and Amazon’s live catalog when we built this guide, and last rechecked the exam codes against AWS’s exam guide index in November 2026.

Match AWS certification books to each exam

Start with the exam you’re booking, not with the book. AWS lists 13 certifications as of November 2026, and four of them are in the middle of a code change or a retirement. A book is only worth buying when its cover shows the code you’ll actually sit. The table maps each certification to its current code, the change that is coming, and where its book is covered.

AWS certification codes and announced changes, checked against AWS’s exam guide index and certification pages in November 2026.

Two of those dates fall within weeks of each other. Registration for both SAP-C03 and DVA-C03 opened on October 27, 2026, the date AWS had set for both full exam guides. Until then, nobody outside AWS had the new task statements. Four DVA-C03 titles were nevertheless already listed on Amazon with publication dates between October 8 and 16, 2026, before anyone outside AWS could have read the new exam guide.

See how we picked these books

We started from the publishers’ complete AWS shelves, not from a search results page. A catalog pass through Amazon’s Creators API listed every AWS certification title from Sybex, Pearson, Packt, O’Reilly and McGraw Hill, with its edition, publication date and stock state. That turned up 32 Sybex AWS certification titles alone, and most of them target exam codes AWS has since retired. A study guide only stayed on the list if it targets a code you can still sit on the day you’d realistically sit it.

Next, we compared each book’s publication date with its exam guide’s revision history. AWS revises exam guides without changing the code: DEA-C01 moved to version 1.1 in December 2025 and SOA-C03 in June 2026, and both revisions added services. A book printed before a revision can still be the right buy, but you should know which skills it cannot cover. Those gaps are named in each pick below.

We left out independently published practice-question books. There were many of them for most exam codes, plenty under 200 pages and several dated the week we checked. We also didn’t sit these exams for this guide. The picks rest on edition currency, publisher coverage claims checked against the official exam guides, and the live listing, not on a pass rate we measured.

1. AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner Study Guide, Second Edition

Ben Piper and David Clinton’s second edition is the Cloud Practitioner (CLF-C02) book to buy when the foundational exam is the right first step for you, and it’s the cheapest way into the certification track.

AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner Study Guide Foundational CLF-C02 Second Edition by Ben Piper and David Clinton book cover
AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner Study Guide, Second Edition by Ben Piper and David Clinton. Image: Wiley/Sybex.

The book runs 320 pages over 12 chapters, and its online test bank holds 500 practice questions plus 100 flashcards. CLF-C02 weights Cloud Technology and Services at 34% and Security and Compliance at 30%, so the chapters on core compute, storage, database and networking services, along with IAM and the shared responsibility model, carry most of the score. The exam guide puts coding, architecture design and troubleshooting out of scope, and the book stays at that level, which is right for a sales engineer, a project manager or a developer who just needs the vocabulary.

One thing dates it. The table of contents still teaches AWS OpsWorks, which AWS shut down for all customers on May 26, 2024, six months after this edition went to print. Treat that section as history, not as something CLF-C02 will ask you to configure.

Best for a non-technical role that works next to cloud teams, or anyone who wants the vocabulary before Solutions Architect Associate. Not for anyone who already runs workloads on AWS, who should go straight to the Solutions Architect Associate, since it covers all of this and more. If you want a 2026 printing, Packt’s CLF-C02 Certification Guide by Rajesh Daswani came out in August 2026 and ran $30 to $40 from Amazon when we checked, and O’Reilly’s CLF-C02 study guide (February 2026) ran $50 to $60. This Sybex book ran $30 to $40. Check the current price on Amazon.

2. AWS Certified Solutions Architect Study Guide, Fourth Edition

Solutions Architect Associate (SAA-C03) is the exam most people book first, and this Sybex guide from the same Piper and Clinton team had the best Amazon sales rank of any major-publisher SAA-C03 book when we checked.

AWS Certified Solutions Architect Study Guide with 900 Practice Test Questions Associate SAA-C03 Fourth Edition by Ben Piper and David Clinton book cover
AWS Certified Solutions Architect Study Guide, Fourth Edition by Ben Piper and David Clinton. Image: Wiley/Sybex.

It covers all four SAA-C03 domains in 480 pages and ships with a 900-question online test bank, flashcards and a searchable glossary. That question bank is the main reason to pick it over the longer Pearson guide. SAA-C03 has kept the same code since August 2022, so this October 2022 edition still matches the exam you’ll sit.

Watch the listing, though. When we checked, Amazon itself wasn’t selling it: a third-party seller held the buy box with a future ship date, at $35 to $45. Look at the delivery estimate before you pay, and if it is weeks out, the Pearson guide below gets you studying sooner.

A first-time candidate who wants one book and a large question bank gets the most from it. Look elsewhere if you learn better from short chapters, because this edition is thorough, not light. Our Solutions Architect Associate book comparison ranks five current SAA-C03 titles and flags the retired editions that still sell under the same search. Check the current price on Amazon.

3. AWS Certified Solutions Architect Associate (SAA-C03) Cert Guide, Second Edition

Mark Wilkins’ Pearson cert guide is the depth option for the same SAA-C03 exam, and the one to pick if you already know the Pearson Test Prep engine from Cisco or CompTIA study.

AWS Certified Solutions Architect Associate SAA-C03 Cert Guide Second Edition by Mark Wilkins Pearson IT Certification book cover
AWS Certified Solutions Architect Associate (SAA-C03) Cert Guide, Second Edition by Mark Wilkins. Image: Pearson IT Certification.

At 832 pages it goes further into each service than the Sybex guide, and it bundles the Pearson Test Prep practice engine. That length is also the catch: a book you finish at 40 percent teaches you less than a shorter one you finish completely. It’s the better buy for someone who reads a chapter, labs it, and then reads the next, and a worse one for anyone cramming in three weeks.

Choose it for maximum coverage in a format you already know from Pearson. Leave it on the shelf if 832 pages will not get read. A third-party seller also held the buy box when we checked, at $55 to $65, so confirm you are getting the new paperback rather than a used relist. Check the current price on Amazon.

4. AWS Certified CloudOps Engineer Study Guide, Associate (SOA-C03)

This is the book that replaces every SysOps Administrator SOA-C02 guide. AWS renamed the operations exam CloudOps Engineer and moved it to SOA-C03 on September 30, 2025, and Sybex shipped this first edition in August 2026.

AWS Certified CloudOps Engineer Study Guide Associate SOA-C03 Exam by Dario Cabianca and Justin Roberts book cover
AWS Certified CloudOps Engineer Study Guide, Associate (SOA-C03) Exam by Dario Cabianca and Justin Roberts. Image: Wiley/Sybex.

Dario Cabianca and Justin Roberts cover monitoring, high availability, deployment, networking, security and cost control in 656 pages, which is the operations half of AWS that the architect exam only touches. It comes with a year of online access to a practice exam, more than 100 flashcards and a glossary. It’s the only SOA-C03 guide from a major publisher, so there’s no real alternative on the shelf.

Check one gap against the exam guide. AWS revised SOA-C03 to version 1.1 on June 1, 2026, adding Amazon Bedrock, AWS DevOps Agent, AWS Health Dashboard, Kiro and AWS Security Agent to the in-scope list, and widening the monitoring skills to cover serverless and AI workloads. The book went to print two months later, but we couldn’t confirm which guide version it was written against, so read the v1.1 revision page and fill any of those five services from the AWS documentation.

Infrastructure and operations engineers, and anyone sitting the exam formerly known as SysOps, are who it was written for. The cheaper route: if you already hold the architect cert and only need the operations delta, the practice exam and the AWS documentation will get you there for less. It ran $55 to $65 when we checked, sold by Amazon. Check the current price on Amazon.

5. AWS Certified Developer Study Guide, Second Edition (DVA-C02)

Brandon Rich’s second edition is the current single-volume book for the Developer Associate, but only until November 30, 2026, the last day AWS will deliver DVA-C02.

AWS Certified Developer Study Guide Associate DVA-C02 Second Edition by Brandon Rich book cover
AWS Certified Developer Study Guide, Second Edition by Brandon Rich. Image: Wiley/Sybex.

Published in January 2025, it tracks the DVA-C02 objectives across 800 pages: Lambda, API Gateway, DynamoDB, CI/CD and the SDK patterns that go with them, plus the usual Sybex practice exam and flashcards. It’s thorough, and it assumes you can already read code.

The timing is the whole decision. DVA-C03 goes live on December 1, 2026, and it is not a light refresh. AWS added a new AI security task, AI-assisted development skills in every domain, and container deployment on ECS, EKS and Fargate. Amazon Bedrock, Bedrock AgentCore, Amazon Q and Kiro join the in-scope services. The four domains and their weights (30, 26, 22 and 22 percent) stay the same, so the core of this book carries over, but the new material is not in it. Buy it only if your exam date is on or before November 30. After that, wait for a publisher’s DVA-C03 edition and use AWS’s DVA-C03 exam guide, now published, in the meantime.

Buy it with a DVA-C02 slot already booked, and not for a test date in December 2026 or later. Check that the cover says Second Edition, because the 2019 first edition, written for DVA-C01, is still listed. It ran $35 to $45 from a third-party seller when we checked. Check the current price on Amazon.

6. AWS Certified Data Engineer Study Guide, Associate (DEA-C01)

The Data Engineer Associate replaced the old Data Analytics Specialty in 2024, and this Sybex guide, written by five AWS analytics solutions architects, is the longest major-publisher book for it at 656 pages.

AWS Certified Data Engineer Study Guide Associate DEA-C01 by Syed Humair and co-authors book cover
AWS Certified Data Engineer Study Guide, Associate (DEA-C01) by Syed Humair, Chenjerai Gumbo, Adam Gatt, Asif Abbasi and Lakshmi Nair. Image: Wiley/Sybex.

Its 12 chapters follow the pipeline: streaming and batch ingestion, automated pipelines, transformation, storage, databases and warehouses, catalogs, then monitoring, access control, encryption and governance. The online package has 5 practice exams and 100 flashcards. That structure matches DEA-C01’s weighting, where Data Ingestion and Transformation alone is 34% of the score and Data Store Management another 26%.

The book came out in March 2025, and AWS revised the DEA-C01 exam guide to version 1.1 on December 12, 2025 without changing the code. That revision added these skills:

  • integrating large language models into data processing
  • managing open table formats such as Apache Iceberg
  • vector index types (HNSW, IVF) and vectorization with Bedrock knowledge bases
  • Amazon SageMaker Catalog and SageMaker Unified Studio projects
  • Amazon Aurora, Amazon S3 Tables and Amazon Bedrock as in-scope services

The book wasn’t written against v1.1, so don’t count on it covering these. The rest of DEA-C01 still matches the book, so buy it for the pipeline material and study the v1.1 additions from AWS’s documentation. That is less work than it sounds, because every addition is named on the exam guide’s revision page.

A data engineer with a year or two of hands-on AWS work, which is what the exam guide expects, gets the most from it. Pass on it if you have never built an ETL job, because it does not teach data engineering from zero. O’Reilly’s DEA-C01 study guide (September 2025) is newer and closes with a “What’s New in AWS for Data Engineers” chapter on SageMaker Unified Studio, SageMaker Catalog and Amazon S3 Tables, and it covers open table formats in chapter 5, so it reaches part of the v1.1 list above. Amazon still showed it as in stock but scarce in November 2026. Our DEA-C01 book guide compares the two side by side. The Sybex guide ran $45 to $55 when we checked. Check the current price on Amazon.

7. AWS for Solutions Architects, Third Edition

For the Solutions Architect Professional, the right book in late 2026 is not an exam guide at all. It’s this architecture book from Saurabh Shrivastava, Neelanjali Srivastav and Dhiraj Thakur, because it survives the switch to SAP-C03.

The reasoning is about dates. SAP-C02 ends on November 16, 2026, and SAP-C03 replaces it the next day with five domains in place of SAP-C02’s four. The new skills cover generative and agentic AI (Bedrock, Bedrock AgentCore, RAG), resilience engineering (Fault Injection Service, Resilience Hub), cloud-native patterns, DevSecOps and post-quantum cryptography in KMS. No publisher has an SAP-C03 book, and the only major-publisher SAP-C02 guide is about to target a retired code. This July 2025 third edition is 788 pages of AWS architecture across 23 chapters, and Packt says this edition adds generative AI and MLOps, which is where SAP-C03 is heading.

Pair it with the SAP-C03 exam guide, now published, and treat the guide as the syllabus and the book as the depth. If you are already booked to sit SAP-C02 on or before November 16, Packt’s SAP-C02 exam guide by Patrick Sard and Yohan Wadia (March 2024, $25 to $35 when we checked) is the exam-shaped option. Don’t buy it for a later date.

An architect with the associate cert and two or more years on AWS is who it suits, which matches the experience AWS recommends for the professional exam. The trade-off: it has no practice questions, so add a question bank once SAP-C03 practice material appears. It ran $30 to $40 when we checked, sold by Amazon. Check the current price on Amazon.

Wait on these exams before buying a book

Four certifications have no book we’d send you to, and saying so is more useful than padding the list. For each one, the official exam guide plus AWS Skill Builder’s exam prep plan is the better spend:

  • DevOps Engineer Professional (DOP-C02): Packt’s only title targets DOP-C01, which ended March 6, 2023
  • Security Specialty (SCS-C03): Sybex and Packt still sell SCS-C02 editions
  • Generative AI Developer Professional (AIP-C01): only self-published titles so far
  • Advanced Networking Specialty (ANS-C01): retires after December 31, 2026

Security is the one that catches people. SCS-C03 went live after December 1, 2025 with restructured domains. Detection and incident response now get their own sections, and generative AI and machine learning security get dedicated coverage. Sybex’s second-edition SCS-C02 guide, published in August 2025, was selling at a clearance price with a lead time when we checked, and that’s the market telling you what it’s worth. For Advanced Networking, a book only makes sense if your exam is already booked before the retirement. A pass before then still earns the full three-year credential, but you won’t be able to renew it by retaking an exam that no longer exists.

The AI certifications have their own guide. AI Practitioner and the Machine Learning Engineer exam (now MLA-C02) are covered in our AWS AI Practitioner and ML Engineer books breakdown. It also flags the retired Machine Learning Specialty books to avoid.

Check the exam code before you buy

Retired AWS books do not disappear. They keep their listings, their old reviews and their spot in search results, and some of them are cheap enough to look like a bargain. Every book in this table was still listed on Amazon when we checked, and every one targets an exam you cannot book anymore:

Retired-code AWS books still listed on Amazon in October 2026, with the last exam day AWS published for each code.

Three checks catch all of them. Run them on any listing before you pay, including the picks above, because a code can change after you read this:

  1. Read the exam code on the cover and match it to the code on AWS’s exam page.
  2. Compare the publication date with the exam guide’s revision history.
  3. Check who sells it and when it ships, since a third-party seller held the buy box on several AWS books when we checked.

The second check is the one people skip. AWS revises an exam guide at least a month before the change reaches the live exam, and it keeps the code when it does, so a DEA-C01 book and a DEA-C01 exam can disagree. The revision pages list every added skill and service, which makes them the fastest way to see what a book is missing.

Pick your first AWS certification

If you’re new to AWS, skip Cloud Practitioner unless your role is not technical, and start with Solutions Architect Associate. It’s the broadest map of the platform, it hasn’t changed code since 2022, and our Solutions Architect Associate exam review walks its domains. From there, the path splits by the work you do:

  • operations and on-call work: CloudOps Engineer, then DevOps Engineer Professional
  • application development: Developer Associate, on DVA-C03 from December
  • pipelines and warehouses: Data Engineer Associate
  • architecture for large organizations: Solutions Architect Professional, on SAP-C03 from November 17

None of these are paper certs, so pair the book with console time from day one. Create an account, install the AWS CLI, create IAM users and groups from it, and stand up a small EKS cluster with Terraform as you read. Set a billing alarm before any of that, because the AWS charges that surprise people come from exactly the labs a study plan tells you to build. If you are weighing clouds instead, the Google Cloud certification books and Azure books follow the same exam-by-exam approach.
