Best AZ-104 Books for 2026: Azure Administrator Study Guides

Search Amazon for an AZ-104 book today and the newest titles come from the publishers with the least history. In the first 90 results of an Amazon catalogue search, fifteen AZ-104 titles carry a 2026 publication date, and not one of them comes from Microsoft Press, Sybex, Packt or O’Reilly. The newest print guide from those Azure publishers is still Packt’s third edition from September 2024. Every serious AZ-104 book went to press 19 to 47 months before the objectives you will be tested on.

So the buying question shifts from “which book is best” to “which book lags least, and how do I cover the rest for free”. Below are the five AZ-104 books and study guides we would buy and what each one is for. We also cover what the April 2026 objectives added that the print shelf misses, and the cheap older editions that look like bargains. We re-checked every listing, price, rating and ISBN against Amazon US and the publishers’ own catalogues in October 2026. The gaps here are measured against the current Azure Administrator objective list rather than guessed.

The AZ-104 book for each kind of reader

The best book for AZ-104 depends on what you already have, mainly an Azure subscription you can spend in and a source of practice questions, so pick by the gap you are filling:

If you buy one title, make it the Packt third edition and spend the difference on lab time. Prices, ratings and stock below are from Amazon US on 21 October 2026, and they move weekly, so treat the price column as a band and check the listing before you order.

Our selection gates and what they threw out

Every candidate had to clear four gates, and each one exists because a cheaper shortcut failed somewhere on this shelf:

  • A publisher with an Azure track record: a print title from a house that has shipped Azure books before, so the edition number means something.
  • A live, exact ASIN: the link resolves to the edition described here and was buyable on the day we checked, confirmed through Amazon’s catalogue API and a live US-locale render of each listing.
  • An ISBN that matches the publisher: the number on Amazon agrees with the publisher’s own catalogue record.
  • A cover that matches the prose: the edition on the cover is the one we describe, which is where two of our five nearly went wrong.

A cached price or a scraped title skips every one of those checks, which is why we did not lean on either.

Most of the shelf fails the first gate. A catalogue search for AZ-104 on 21 October 2026 returned 90 results, 24 of them Azure Administrator titles. Of the 15 with a 2026 publication date, 4 list “Independently published” and the other 11 list no publisher at all, and 11 of the 15 came back as Kindle editions. Two put a 2026 to 2027 range in the title, and one already carries 26 ratings, but none has an edition history you can check, so a year on the cover is the only evidence of currency. We’d rather recommend a 2024 book we can audit line by line against the objectives.

The edition checks caught two traps. The Packt title is a third edition with a single author, where the second edition had two, and Amazon’s own listing title omits the edition number entirely. The catalogue feed for the cheaper Sybex guide serves a cover from a pre-publication version of the book, with a different title and author. Wiley’s own image for the same ISBN shows the book that actually shipped. Both would have produced a wrong claim in a guide that never opened the cover.

The April 2026 AZ-104 objectives

The Azure Administrator exam is scored out of 1000 with 700 to pass, gives you 100 minutes, and the certification expires after 12 months unless you renew it with a free online assessment. Microsoft’s published study guide still lists the skills measured as of 17 April 2026 when we re-checked it on 21 October, split into five functional groups:

Functional groupWeight
Manage Azure identities and governance20 to 25%
Implement and manage storage15 to 20%
Deploy and manage Azure compute resources20 to 25%
Implement and manage virtual networking15 to 20%
Monitor and maintain Azure resources10 to 15%

One detail rescues a 2024 book. Microsoft publishes a change log comparing the April 2026 objectives against the previous version. Every functional group in it reads “No change”, and the six rows that did move (the audience profile plus five objectives) are all marked “Minor”. Nothing was added or removed wholesale, which means a book organised around these five groups is still structurally correct.

Older books lag in the individual bullets instead. These are all in the current list and are where older books read thinnest:

  • Azure Container Apps: provisioning, plus sizing and scaling alongside Container Instances.
  • Azure Backup vault: a separate resource from the Recovery Services vault that holds backups for newer workloads, with its own backup policies.
  • Encryption at host: a virtual machine setting that encrypts data on the host server itself, including temporary disks and disk caches.
  • Object replication: asynchronous copies of block blobs between storage accounts.
  • ARM to Bicep: converting an exported ARM template to a Bicep file, and editing Bicep directly.
  • Connection monitor: the Network Watcher tool for testing paths between endpoints.

You can measure that gap instead of guessing at it. Wiley publishes the index of the May 2022 Sybex guide as a PDF. It carries no entry for Container Apps, Backup vault, encryption at host, object replication or Bicep, while Azure Active Directory appears 8 times and Azure AD around 30 more, the brand Microsoft announced it was renaming to Entra ID in July 2023. Container Apps only reached general availability in May 2022, and Microsoft’s study guide notes that most questions cover generally available features, so the gap is real but narrow. You patch it with the portal and the free practice assessment, not with a fourth book.

1. Exam Ref AZ-104 Microsoft Azure Administrator, Second Edition

Charles Pluta’s Exam Ref is the closest thing to an official book, published by Microsoft Press and laid out chapter-per-functional-group in Microsoft’s own order, though two of the five chapter titles now read a word out of step with the current objective names.

The structure is the reason to buy it. Five chapters map to the five functional groups, and a sixth is dedicated to exam updates, which is an admission by the publisher that the objectives move faster than print does. At 384 pages it is the leanest of the four exam-shaped guides here, against 592 for either Sybex volume and 824 for the Packt third edition. That is deliberate, because an Exam Ref assumes you’ve done the work and are checking your coverage, not learning Azure from zero.

Skip it if you want to be taught. It ships with no practice questions at all, since the practice-test bundle is a separate product. Its 3.7 rating across 24 ratings is the lowest of the three titles here with a rating sample worth reading. When we checked, the Amazon offer for the paperback was shipped and sold by PBShop UK, a marketplace seller quoting delivery two to three weeks out. Microsoft Press sells the print book direct for about $40, under that $45 to $50 offer, so buy direct unless an Amazon-sold offer appears. Buy it as a coverage checklist alongside something else rather than as your only book. Check the current price on Amazon.

2. Exam Ref AZ-104 Microsoft Azure Administrator Certification and Beyond, Third Edition

Donovan Kelly’s third edition is the newest AZ-104 book from Microsoft Press, Sybex or Packt and, at 824 pages, more than twice the length of the Microsoft Press Exam Ref. On Amazon it costs about a quarter to a third less than that book, though the gap narrows to a few dollars if you buy the Exam Ref direct from Microsoft Press.

September 2024 sounds like a small edge over June 2024 until you read the contents. Packt’s own chapter list opens on Managing Microsoft Entra ID Objects, gives Bicep a chapter of its own, and dedicates another to creating and configuring containers, which is exactly where the older books read as dated. This is the book most likely to use current portal blades and product names. The “and Beyond” in the title is honest about its approach: it walks you through doing the thing in the portal rather than summarising what the objective says. The cover advertises free online exam-prep tools (flashcards, mock exams and hands-on activities), which you redeem online rather than find printed in the book.

The editorial change to watch: one author now writes the whole book where the second edition had two. Its 4.3 rating across 67 ratings pools reviews across editions, so some of that praise belongs to a book you are not buying. Check that the offer you pick says third edition, because the 2022 second edition was still offered new by a marketplace seller for well under half the price when we checked, and that trap gets its own buying check below. Check the current price on Amazon.

3. MCA Azure Administrator Study Guide with Online Labs

Rithin Skaria’s Sybex study guide comes bundled with hosted lab modules here, and the labs are the entire reason it exists at more than twice the price of the plain edition.

You get 11 XtremeLabs lab modules, two custom practice exams, 100 electronic flashcards and a searchable key-term glossary. The two entitlements run on different clocks, which matters more than the price. The lab code included with the book buys 6 months of unlimited XtremeLabs access, while the Sybex test bank, flashcards and glossary give a year from activation. For anyone who cannot spin resources up in a real subscription, or who does not want a forgotten VM Scale Set on the credit card at month end, the labs change the economics of studying. The book underneath is a full teaching text, not a checklist.

Skip it if you already have an Azure subscription you can burn a few dollars a day in, because then you’re paying a premium for labs you can build yourself, and building them yourself teaches more. Its September 2022 content is also the second-oldest here, so the Entra renaming and the newer compute bullets read as gaps. Register the lab code only when you are ready to study. Six months is a real deadline, and activating it the day the parcel arrives can burn the labs you paid the premium for. Check the current price on Amazon.

4. MCA Microsoft Certified Associate Azure Administrator Study Guide

The plain Sybex guide carries the largest rating sample of the five, 4.5 across 77 ratings, and it is the cheapest way into the Sybex test bank.

Same author, same teaching approach as the labs edition, minus the labs. Wiley describes the online material that comes with this edition as hundreds of practice questions, flashcards and a glossary. Sybex writes for people who want the concept explained before the click path, and the online test bank is good at exposing the objectives you have been avoiding. That is worth more in the last two weeks than another read-through.

It’s the oldest book here, published May 2022, so it predates the Entra ID naming and several current compute and storage bullets. And its catalogue metadata is a mess: several retailers and library databases show a pre-publication title and a different author for this ISBN. The cover art served by the trade catalogue feed is from that earlier version. Match the cover in the listing against the publisher’s own image before ordering, especially if you’re buying used. When we checked, the buy box was a marketplace seller, Canyon Ridge Media, shipping from Amazon’s warehouse with one copy left, so check the seller first. Check the current price on Amazon.

5. Learn Azure Administration, Second Edition

Kamil Mrzygłód’s book is the one on this list that is not shaped like an exam, and that’s exactly why it belongs here.

Its five parts organise around cloud administration as a job: an Azure and infrastructure-as-code introduction, then networking, virtual machines, storage, and governance and monitoring, with the reasoning behind the choices rather than the objective list. AZ-104 leans on scenario questions, the ones that ask which of four technically valid options costs least or fails over correctly, and that judgement is what this book builds. It is also the right first purchase for anyone moving from on-premises administration. It doesn’t assume you already think in subscriptions and resource groups, and readers coming from the Windows Server administration books will recognise its pacing.

Skip it as your only book. At 346 pages nothing in it is mapped to a functional group, so you’ll finish it without knowing which objectives you are weak on. Pair it with one of the four guides above, or with the Azure certification reading list if you’re planning a longer path through several Microsoft exams. Check the current price on Amazon.

Four listing checks before any AZ-104 book

Four checks separate a useful purchase from a $40 paperweight, and each takes about a minute on the listing page.

Publication date against the objective date. Microsoft stamps the objective list with the date it took effect, currently 17 April 2026. Anything published before late 2023 predates the Microsoft Entra ID rename, which Microsoft announced in July 2023 and rolled out over the rest of that year. The identity chapter in those books will use the old names. Anything with a future-sounding year in the title and no publisher behind it is telling you about its marketing, not its content.

The edition behind a cheap listing. The cheapest publisher-backed AZ-104 paperbacks on Amazon are older editions of titles on this list. When we checked, Packt’s 2022 second edition of Certification and Beyond was offered new by a marketplace seller for under $15, and Microsoft Press’s 2021 first edition of the Exam Ref turned up used for under $20, both written before the Entra ID rename and the current objective list. Microsoft Press, Sybex and Packt books carry an edition history you can verify against the publisher’s catalogue, so check it before the price. The self-published tier reprints a title with a new year and no revision history at all.

Practice questions, and where they live. Two of these books ship the Sybex test bank and one of those two also bundles hosted labs. The Packt third edition redeems flashcards and mock exams online. The Microsoft Press Exam Ref ships no questions at all, and Learn Azure Administration is not built around them. That’s a bigger difference than page count, and if your book has no questions, plan on Microsoft’s free practice assessment plus the AZ-104 exam sandbox instead of buying a second book.

The cover and the edition you are actually being shipped. Both surprises in our research were edition problems, one a third edition sold without its edition number and one a stale cover attached to a live ISBN. Buying used makes this worse, so open the publisher’s product page for the ISBN and compare before you pay.

A study path that fills what the books miss

Assume your book is somewhere between 19 and 47 months behind, depending on which one you bought, and plan for it. Read the book for structure, then close the gap in the portal with Microsoft’s own material, which is free and current by definition. In practice that is three passes:

  1. Mark the gaps: open the study guide next to your book’s contents page and tick every bullet the book does not cover. On a 2022 title the list is short but real, and the six bullets above are most of it.
  2. Test early: run Microsoft’s free practice assessment before you finish the book, not after. It’s scored against the current objectives, so it finds the lag for you.
  3. Build what you missed: create the weak objectives by hand in a subscription and delete them the same day, set a budget alert first, and spend the most time on governance.

Governance shares the top weight band with compute and carries the least intuition, so policy, locks, tags and budgets deserve real portal time rather than a read. Backup is the other area where hands-on beats the page, because the scenario questions reward people who have felt how long a restore takes. Our walkthrough of automating Azure backups against AWS snapshots shows the moving parts. Once the badge is in hand, Azure cost optimization is the part of the job AZ-104 only samples.

Where you go next decides what you read next. If AZ-104 is your first Microsoft exam and the vocabulary still feels heavy, the AZ-900 books cover the fundamentals in a weekend. If the next step is infrastructure as code rather than another Microsoft exam, the Terraform and OpenTofu reading list picks up where the Bicep objectives stop. You can write your first infrastructure as code in an evening. For the other two clouds, the Google Cloud certification books and the cloud computing reading list cover the same ground.

The renewal changes the maths on all of this. Your certification expires 12 months after you earn it and renews through a free online assessment, so the book you buy now is a one-time cost against an annual commitment. Buy the newest one that fits your budget, keep the second-book money for lab spend, and let Microsoft’s free material carry the currency the print shelf can’t.
