Most Google Cloud certification books on sale today were written for exam guides Google has since replaced. The Professional Cloud Architect guide now uses three new case studies out of four and tests Gemini, the Well-Architected Framework and the Agent Platform. The Associate Cloud Engineer guide has been cut from five sections to four, and Gemini tooling now runs through it. A 2022 or 2023 study guide still teaches most of what you need, but you should know what it cannot cover before you pay.

We compared Google’s current exam guides with archived copies and matched twelve books to the certifications they actually fit: Cloud Digital Leader, Associate Cloud Engineer, Professional Cloud Architect, and the Data, ML, DevOps, Security, Network and Database professional exams. Every edition, page count, publication date and price was checked against the publishers where we could reach them and Amazon’s live catalog in October 2026, and each pick tells you who should pass on it.

Pick a Google Cloud certification book fast

Start from the exam you are booking, not from the shelf, because no single book covers more than one Google Cloud certification well. These are the picks for the exams most people take first:

For the Machine Learning, Database, Security, Network, DevOps and Data Engineer exams, picks 7 to 12 name the book we would start with. Two of Google’s newest certifications, Generative AI Leader and Professional Agentic Architect, have no book from a major publisher yet, so you prepare for those from the exam guide and Google’s own learning path.

Check which exam guide a book was written for

A certification book’s real spec is the exam guide it was written against. Google publishes each guide as a PDF and revises it without changing the certification’s name, so a book that was accurate on release day can drift a long way while still selling under the same title. We pulled the current Professional Cloud Architect guide and the copy the Internet Archive saved in November 2024, then compared them section by section:

Professional Cloud ArchitectGuide archived Nov 2024Current guide
Designing and planning a solution~24%~25%
Managing and provisioning infrastructure~15%~17.5%
Designing for security and compliance~18%~17.5%
Analyzing and optimizing processes~18%~15%
Managing implementation~11%~12.5%
Section 6Operations reliability, ~14%Operations excellence, ~12.5%
Case studiesEHR Healthcare, Helicopter Racing League, Mountkirk Games, TerramEarthAltostrat Media, Cymbal Retail, EHR Healthcare, KnightMotives Automotive
Gemini, Well-Architected, Model ArmorNot mentionedTested in several sections

The weights moved only a point or three, so the old books are not wrong about networking, IAM or storage. The case studies are the real problem: they carry 20 to 30 percent of the exam, and three of the four are new. The current guide also asks you to place AI workloads on the Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform (which earlier copies of the same guide called Vertex AI), use Gemini Cloud Assist, and secure models with Model Armor. No book published in 2022 covers any of that, so plan to read these parts of the current guide yourself:

  • The four case studies, especially Altostrat Media, Cymbal Retail and KnightMotives
  • Section 1.2 and 6.1 on the Well-Architected Framework
  • Sections 2.4 and 2.5 on the Agent Platform and Google AI APIs
  • Section 3.1 on securing AI with Model Armor

You can read all of them in an evening with the guide open, and they are where a 2022 book will leave you guessing on the day.

The Associate Cloud Engineer guide changed shape in the same period. The February 2025 copy had five sections; the current one has four, weighted 20, 30, 30 and 20 percent, and it now names Gemini CLI, Google Antigravity, Gemini Cloud Assist and deploying an agent to Agent Runtime. Both ACE books on this list came out in 2023, which is why we pair them with hands-on practice rather than treating either one as complete.

Compare the Google Cloud certification books

Prices are what Amazon charged on the day we checked and move often, so treat them as a guide. The year column is the one to read first, because it tells you how much of the current exam guide a book could have seen.

Four titles are from 2026: Haggerty, Flynn, Holmquist and the SRE second edition. Everything else dates from 2022 to 2024, so read it with the current exam guide open beside it.

1. Google Professional Cloud Architect Study Guide

This is the only Professional Cloud Architect book from a major publisher we found that was released after Google rewrote the exam guide, and that alone puts it first. Patrick Haggerty’s O’Reilly title came out on Kindle on October 12, 2026, and the paperback ships on November 17. The page counts in the publisher and retail listings disagree, so we leave that number out.

Being new is the strength and the risk. It was published after the guide changed, but it has no reader track record yet, and we couldn’t read its table of contents to confirm how it treats the four new case studies. If your exam date is before mid-November, buy the Kindle edition now rather than waiting for print.

Pass on it for now if you would rather buy a book with years of reader feedback behind it; the Sybex guide below has that, though it predates the new guide. Around $60 for the paperback preorder. Check the current price on Amazon.

2. Google Cloud Certified Professional Cloud Architect Study Guide, 2nd Edition

Dan Sullivan’s Sybex guide has been the default Professional Cloud Architect book for years, and the reason is the online learning center: chapter review questions, full-length practice exams and hundreds of flashcards. Sybex wrote it around how an architect reasons about requirements and constraints, which still matches how Google words its scenario questions.

Published in April 2022, it predates every change in the table above. Its focus areas were Kubernetes, Anthos and multicloud design, and those are still on the exam. What it cannot give you is Altostrat Media, Cymbal Retail, KnightMotives or the Gemini and Agent Platform topics. We’d use it for the core architecture domains and its practice exams, then read the current case studies from Google directly. The listing showed low stock when we checked.

If you only want one book and your exam is soon, the Haggerty title is the safer single purchase. Around $42, list $65. Check the current price on Amazon.

3. Google Cloud Certified Associate Cloud Engineer Study Guide, 2nd Edition

The Associate Cloud Engineer exam tests whether you can actually build and run things in a project, and Sullivan’s second ACE guide teaches it that way. At 576 pages it covers choosing a compute service, picking storage, IAM and network setup, with Sybex’s online practice tests included.

Its March 2023 date matters because the current ACE guide moved to four sections and added Gemini CLI, Gemini Cloud Assist and Agent Runtime. Fill that gap with practice: install the gcloud CLI, set up Gemini CLI, and deploy something real, such as a Cloud Run service with Terraform. Hands-on time is what the ACE exam rewards anyway.

People who already run workloads on Google Cloud every day can probably do without it, because the exam guide plus Google’s free sample questions may be enough. Around $36, list $55. Check the current price on Amazon.

4. Google Cloud Associate Cloud Engineer Certification and Implementation Guide

Agnieszka Koziorowska and Wojciech Marusiak’s Packt book is the implementation-first alternative for ACE. Its subtitle promises deployment, management and monitoring of Google Cloud solutions across 606 pages, which suits people who remember a command better after typing it than after reading about it.

Dated September 2023, it shares the Sybex book’s blind spot on the newer Gemini tooling. We’d buy one ACE book, not both: Sybex if you want practice tests, Packt if you want labs.

Look elsewhere for a question bank; this is an implementation guide first. Around $47. Check the current price on Amazon.

5. Google Cloud Certified Cloud Digital Leader Study Guide

Cloud Digital Leader is one of Google’s two foundational certifications (Generative AI Leader is the other), aimed at people who work alongside engineers rather than as one. Jon Flynn’s Sybex guide is the newest book for it from a major publisher. It came out in March 2026, runs 208 pages and includes access to the Sybex online test bank.

Wiley says it covers every CDL objective, from digital transformation and data innovation to infrastructure and security. That lines up with the six areas on Google’s certification page. One practical note: the Amazon listing showed it shipping in 9 to 10 days when we checked, so order it before you book the exam.

Engineers heading straight for ACE should not bother; CDL is a business-level exam and the book stays at that level. Around $50, list $58. Check the current price on Amazon.

6. Visualizing Google Cloud

Priyanka Vergadia’s book is 101 illustrated references to Google Cloud services, and it is the cheapest book here that helps with every exam. It explains services as drawings rather than prose, which helps with the which-service-fits comparisons Google’s scenario questions keep asking.

Treat it as a companion, not a study guide: you get no practice questions and no mapping to an exam guide. It is also from April 2022, so the newest AI products are not in it.

Readers who learn better from text than from diagrams will get less from it. Around $25, list $36. Check the current price on Amazon.

7. Official Google Cloud Certified Professional Machine Learning Engineer Study Guide

Mona Mona and Pratap Ramamurthy’s Sybex guide is the newest major-publisher book for the Professional Machine Learning Engineer exam. It walks the whole ML process on Google Cloud, from data and feature engineering through training and deployment, and spends real time on when to choose a custom model, AutoML or a pretrained API.

This is the book that has aged most. It was published in November 2023 and teaches TensorFlow, Kubeflow and Vertex AI. Vertex AI is the platform Google now calls Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform, so that part still applies. The gap is generative AI: the current guide expects you to fine-tune Gemini models, choose from Model Garden and build with models such as Imagen and Veo. Packt’s older Journey to Become a Google Cloud Machine Learning Engineer by Logan Song (2022) has the same blind spot. The ML fundamentals still hold, but practice the generative parts separately, for example with Gemini on Vertex AI from Python.

Leave it on the shelf if you are comfortable with ML theory and only need the Google-specific generative AI material. The listing showed only a few copies left. Around $40, list $68. Check the current price on Amazon.

8. Google Cloud Certified Professional Cloud Database Engineer Study Guide

Jake Holmquist’s Sybex guide came out in May 2026 for the Professional Cloud Database Engineer exam, and it’s one of the newest books on this list. Wiley describes 100 percent coverage of the tested domains, hundreds of practice questions and a year of the online test bank with a practice exam and flashcards.

The current database exam guide does not mention Gemini by name, so a 2026 book has had less to chase than the architect or ML titles. It does include one bullet on using database technologies to support generative AI and LLM use cases, and Google says it is updating its exams after Next ’26, so read that part of the guide yourself. Wiley lists capacity planning, migrations, access management, backup and recovery, and monitoring among its topics, which is most of what a database engineer actually gets paged for.

It is the wrong book if you are aiming at Data Engineer instead, because the two exams overlap on BigQuery but test different jobs. The listing showed low stock when we checked. Around $60, list $66. Check the current price on Amazon.

9. Official Google Cloud Certified Professional Cloud Security Engineer Exam Guide

Ankush Chowdhary and Prashant Kulkarni’s Packt guide carries the “Official” badge for the Professional Cloud Security Engineer exam and runs 496 pages. The current guide puts about 70 percent of its weight on three areas: configuring access, boundary protection and data protection, so that’s where your reading time should go.

Packt published it in August 2023, so compare its objective map with the current guide before you rely on it. If you want something newer, Dario Cabianca’s Apress Professional Cloud Security Engineer Certification Companion came out in June 2024. Identity is the domain worth practicing hands-on, and Workload Identity Federation for GitHub Actions is a good, realistic exercise.

SOC analysts should look past it: Google now has a separate Security Operations Engineer certification for that job. Around $60, list $63. Check the current price on Amazon.

10. GCP Professional Cloud Network Engineer Certification Companion

Dario Cabianca’s Apress companion was written for the Professional Cloud Network Engineer exam as it stood in 2023, and Apress says it covers every objective of that guide: VPC design, hybrid connectivity, network services, security and operations. The current guide has since added a separate sixth section on network security, worth about 13 percent, so check the book against it. Apress also explains how Google Cloud networking differs from AWS and Azure, which helps if you are coming from another cloud.

Apress recommends basic cloud knowledge plus some programming experience before you start. Hold off if you have never configured a VPC, because the book assumes you know what one is; start with ACE and come back. The listing had only a couple of copies when we checked. Around $56, list $80. Check the current price on Amazon.

11. Site Reliability Engineering, 2nd Edition

This is not a certification book, and it is still the right one for the Professional Cloud DevOps Engineer exam. The current guide gives “Applying site reliability engineering practices” its own section at about 18 percent, and Google’s SRE book is where Google wrote those practices down.

Site Reliability Engineering How Google Runs Production Systems 2nd Edition O'Reilly book cover

The 2026 second edition is a full revision of the 2016 book and runs 794 pages. Read the SLO, error budget and incident chapters for the exam, and keep the rest as a reference. Our SRE book guide covers the companion titles.

You get no exam-style questions here, so pair it with Google’s DevOps learning path. Typically $60 to $80. Check the current price on Amazon.

12. Data Engineering with Google Cloud Platform, 2nd Edition

No major publisher has a current Professional Data Engineer study guide in print. Packt’s cert guide is listed for August 2027 and the Sybex one dates from 2020. Adi Wijaya’s book fills the gap the practical way: across 476 pages you build a scalable data platform on Google Cloud, which is the job the exam describes.

Data Engineering with Google Cloud Platform 2nd Edition by Adi Wijaya book cover
Data Engineering with Google Cloud Platform, 2nd Edition by Adi Wijaya. Image: Packt Publishing.

Wijaya’s April 2024 second edition teaches the job the exam tests rather than the exam itself, so map its chapters to the guide’s five sections as you go. Keep an eye on cost while you practice. BigQuery’s on-demand pricing bills by the bytes each query scans, and our GCP costs breakdown shows where lab bills come from.

Do not expect practice questions; it has none aimed at the exam. Around $24, list $42. Check the current price on Amazon.

Use the exam guide where no book exists

Several Google Cloud certifications have no current book from a major publisher. We found only self-published or outdated titles on Amazon for these, and we would not pay for them over Google’s free material:

  • Generative AI Leader ($99)
  • Professional Agentic Architect (general release from mid-November 2026)
  • Associate Data Practitioner
  • Professional Security Operations Engineer
  • Professional Cloud Developer (newest major-publisher book is from 2021)

For these, the certification page links each exam guide and a learning path on Google Skills. Read the guide first, mark every product you haven’t used, and spend your study time in a project rather than in a book.

Which Google Cloud certification to take first

Google’s certification pages list these registration fees, before tax, as of October 2026:

  • Cloud Digital Leader and Generative AI Leader: $99
  • Associate Cloud Engineer: $125
  • Every professional exam, including Agentic Architect at general release: $200

For most engineers the answer is Associate Cloud Engineer: it is valid for three years, and it proves you can operate a project, which every professional exam assumes. Cloud Digital Leader ($99) only makes sense if your job is commercial or managerial rather than hands-on. Most professional exams run two hours, and Professional Cloud Architect is the most searched certification on this page, which is why it sits first here. If you’re building toward Kubernetes work on Google Cloud, a production GKE Autopilot setup is good practice for both ACE and PCA, and the Kubernetes certification books round-up covers the CNCF exams that pair well with them.

If you are weighing clouds rather than certifications, the same approach applies to AWS Solutions Architect Associate books and AZ-900 books: buy the book written for the current exam guide. Then check the guide yourself for anything Google added after the book went to print.
