AWS Solutions Architect Associate Exam (SAA-C03): Study Plan

The AWS Solutions Architect Associate exam (SAA-C03) gives you 65 questions in 130 minutes, and only 50 of them count. The other 15 are unscored trial items that look exactly like the real ones, so you cannot tell which to skip. You pass at a scaled 720, and the scoring is compensatory, so you do not need to clear every domain, only the total.

This page covers what SAA-C03 tests, how to split your study time across its four domains, where to practice without a surprise bill, and the three books we’d buy. The full five-book comparison lives in our SAA-C03 book guide. This version replaces a 2023 exam diary whose free-tier advice no longer holds for new AWS accounts. Every exam fact below was checked against AWS’s SAA-C03 exam guide and certification policy pages in October 2026.

Know the SAA-C03 Format and Scoring

Every number that shapes your prep fits in one table. The figures come from the AWS certification page and the SAA-C03 exam guide:

ItemSAA-C03
Questions65 (50 scored, 15 unscored and unmarked)
Question typesMultiple choice (1 of 4) and multiple response (2+ of 5 or more)
Time130 minutes
Fee150 USD; 50% off your next AWS exam once you hold one certification
Passing score720 on a 100 to 1,000 scaled score
DeliveryPearson VUE test center or online proctored
Languages10, including English, Japanese, Korean and Simplified Chinese
Service namesOfficial short names (Amazon SNS); the Help button on every question lists the full names
ResultsWithin five business days, in your AWS Certification Account
Retake14 calendar days after a fail, full fee each attempt; after a pass, no retake of the same version for 2 years
Validity3 years; recertify by passing the latest version of this exam, or by earning Solutions Architect Professional

Do not read 720 as 72%. AWS sets the raw cut score on one form with a panel of experts, then equates every other form to it. A harder set of questions therefore needs fewer correct answers to reach the same 720. Unanswered questions are marked wrong and there is no penalty for guessing, so never leave a question blank when the clock runs down.

The pacing works out to two minutes per question. That is tighter than it sounds, because the scenario questions run several lines before you reach the options. Plan one pass that answers everything and flags the doubtful ones, then a second pass on the flags.

If you test online, you cannot leave the camera’s view at all, not even for a restroom break. Book a slot when you can sit still for well over two hours.

How Hard Is the Solutions Architect Associate Exam?

It is hard for someone who has only read about AWS, and fair for someone who has built a VPC with private subnets and put a load balancer in front of an Auto Scaling group. AWS recommends at least a year of hands-on design work and publishes no pass rate on its certification pages.

Most questions describe a business requirement and offer four plausible architectures. The right one is the cheapest, the most resilient or the least operational effort, depending on which word the question stresses. Reading for that qualifier is half the skill.

Check Whether SAA-C03 Is Still Current

SAA-C03 is still the live version in October 2026, as it has been since August 2022. AWS lists no successor on the certification page. The only scheduled change is the Italian-language version, which retires after December 31, 2026. That makes SAA the stable one while the exams around it change:

ExamCode todayWhat changes
Solutions Architect AssociateSAA-C03Nothing announced; Italian version retires after Dec 31, 2026
Developer AssociateDVA-C02DVA-C03 from Dec 1, 2026 (DVA-C02 last day Nov 30)
Machine Learning Engineer AssociateMLA-C02MLA-C02 in English since Sep 29, 2026, ahead of its full launch in all languages on Jan 14, 2027
CloudOps Engineer AssociateSOA-C03Already changed: replaced SOA-C02 on Sep 30, 2025
Solutions Architect ProfessionalSAP-C02SAP-C03 from Nov 17, 2026 (registration opens Oct 27)

AWS announced the DVA and SAP replacements on September 1, 2026, roughly three months before they take effect. AWS publishes no minimum notice period, but if a new SAA version followed that pattern, a switch partway through a six-week plan is unlikely.

The SAP change matters if SAA is your first step toward the professional level, because SAP-C03 adds generative AI and resilience services that today’s associate books predate. Our exam-by-exam AWS certification book guide tracks those dates across all 13 certifications.

Weight Your Study Time by Domain

The four domain weights translate directly into scored questions, which is the most useful way to read them. Multiplying each weight by the 50 scored items gives an approximate count, because AWS does not publish a fixed split per form:

DomainWeightAbout this many scored questionsTask statementsServices that carry it
1. Design Secure Architectures30%153IAM, IAM Identity Center, Organizations and SCPs, KMS, security groups and NACLs, WAF, Shield
2. Design Resilient Architectures26%132API Gateway, SQS, ALB, Route 53, RDS Proxy, Step Functions
3. Design High-Performing Architectures24%125S3, EBS, EFS, EC2 Auto Scaling, ElastiCache, Aurora, DynamoDB, CloudFront, Global Accelerator
4. Design Cost-Optimized Architectures20%104S3 storage classes and lifecycle, Savings Plans, Spot, Cost Explorer, Budgets

Security is the biggest slice, so IAM policy evaluation, cross-account roles and KMS encryption deserve the most hours. Domain 3 has the most task statements but fewer questions per statement, which rewards breadth. You need to know when EFS beats EBS or DynamoDB beats Aurora, not every tuning knob.

Domain 4 is the smallest, yet it leaks into the others because so many questions end with “most cost-effective”. Our breakdown of what actually charges you on AWS covers the NAT gateway and data transfer traps those questions like to use.

Follow a Six-Week SAA-C03 Study Plan

Six weeks at eight to ten hours a week is what we’d give someone who already runs Linux servers and has used the AWS console. If you have never opened an AWS account, double it and start with networking basics. The order matters more than the length, because each block builds on the one before:

  1. Week 1: read the SAA-C03 exam guide end to end, then take the free 20-question Official Practice Question Set cold to find your gaps
  2. Week 2: IAM, KMS and VPC design hands-on; Organizations, SCPs and Control Tower on paper or in a Builder Lab (Domain 1)
  3. Week 3: decoupling and high availability with SQS, SNS, ALB, Route 53 and RDS Proxy (Domain 2)
  4. Week 4: storage, databases, caching and edge services (Domain 3)
  5. Week 5: pricing models and storage lifecycle (Domain 4), any hands-on Organizations work, plus the Official Practice Exam
  6. Week 6: review every wrong answer against the docs, then a full timed run from your book’s question bank

Build something every week rather than only reading. Creating IAM users and roles yourself teaches policy evaluation faster than any chapter on it, and our guide to managing IAM users and groups with the AWS CLI walks through it.

Book your slot once you clear 720 comfortably on a first attempt at a full practice exam, not before. AWS allows only two reschedules per appointment, each at least 24 hours out, so a date you keep pushing back runs out of room.

Practice on AWS Without a Surprise Bill

New AWS accounts no longer get the year-long free tier that the 2023 version of this page relied on. A new account starts on the Free plan with $100 in credits and up to $100 more for completing onboarding activities. The plan ends after six months or when the credits run out, whichever comes first. Nothing bills on the Free plan, so a forgotten instance cannot run up a charge, but it does burn credits, and running out ends the plan early. When the plan ends, the account closes automatically; AWS keeps the data for 90 days, and upgrading within that window restores it. Most new customers can sign up without adding a card.

There is one catch that matters for SAA-C03 specifically. The Free plan converts itself to a Paid plan the moment you join AWS Organizations or set up a Control Tower landing zone, and the upgrade is permanent because a Paid plan cannot be downgraded. Domain 1 asks you to design multi-account security with exactly those services and SCPs, so practice everything else first, and leave the Organizations work for last or do it in a guided lab. The Free plan also blocks Savings Plans and Reserved Instances, so learn those from the pricing pages rather than by buying one. It covers selected services only, so a few services in SAA-C03 scope may need the Paid plan or a Builder Lab.

Guided AWS Builder Labs come with an AWS Skill Builder subscription and run in AWS-provided lab environments, so nothing you create there lands on your own bill. Whichever route you take, set up the CLI early, because the console alone hides too much of how IAM and VPC fit together. Our guide to installing the AWS CLI on Linux and macOS gets you there in a few minutes.

Use Practice Questions, Not Dumps

Practice questions are where you learn to read for the qualifier, so use the official ones first. AWS offers three, and only the first is free:

  • Official Practice Question Set: 20 questions with feedback, good as a first diagnostic
  • Official Practice Exam: 65 questions in 130 minutes, same scaled scoring, in Skill Builder at $29 a month or $449 a year
  • AWS Escape Room: 100+ exam-style questions plus labs, also in the paid subscription

Both official sets repeat the same questions in a new order on every retake. Only your first attempt at the practice exam measures readiness, and after that you are scoring your memory. One month of Skill Builder covers the practice exam and the Builder Labs together, which is the cheapest way to get both if you time it for weeks five and six. The book banks below add hundreds of fresh questions for the later runs.

The 2023 version of this page leaned on a 500-question bank of unknown origin, and we would not repeat that advice. Section 2.2 of the AWS Certification Program Agreement bars you from possessing or using leaked exam content. AWS’s testing policy also says it can open an investigation based on data forensics analysis of a candidate’s exam performance.

Dumps also teach the wrong skill. You memorise an answer letter instead of learning why the cheaper or more resilient design wins, and that reasoning is what the job needs after you pass.

Pick One SAA-C03 Book

One good book is enough when you pair it with AWS’s exam guide and hands-on work. These three trade-publisher titles were written for SAA-C03, are still sold new, and suit different study habits. If you want the full five-book comparison, including the retired SAA-C02 editions still on sale, read our best AWS Solutions Architect Associate books guide.

AWS Certified Solutions Architect Study Guide, 4th Edition (Sybex)

Ben Piper and David Clinton’s Sybex guide is the one to buy if you want reading and drilling in a single purchase:

It runs 480 pages from October 2022, with review questions in every chapter and an online bank of 900 practice questions plus electronic flashcards. The online access lasts one year after you activate it, so register the book when you start studying, not when you buy it.

Pass on it if long-form prose puts you to sleep, because the chapters read like a textbook. It sold for about $38 in October 2026, from a third-party seller shipping on a later date; check the current price on Amazon.

AWS Certified Solutions Architect Associate (SAA-C03) Exam Guide (Packt)

Michelle Chismon and Kate Gawron’s Packt guide is the newest of the three and the leanest:

Published in November 2024 at 346 pages, it suits someone who already knows AWS from work and wants the SAA-C03 scope organised. It adds chapter-end questions plus online mock exams and flashcards. Beginners should look elsewhere, because the short page count assumes you can fill gaps yourself. It is the cheapest of the three, under $30 against a $50 list in October 2026; check the current price on Amazon.

AWS Certified Solutions Architect Associate (SAA-C03) Cert Guide, 2nd Edition (Pearson)

Mark Wilkins’ Pearson Cert Guide is the deepest of the three and the best fit for a structured study routine:

AWS Certified Solutions Architect Associate SAA-C03 Cert Guide Second Edition by Mark Wilkins Pearson IT Certification book cover

At 832 pages from June 2023, it opens each chapter with a “Do I Know This Already?” quiz so you can skip what you know. The Pearson Test Prep software adds practice questions and online flashcards. It is organised around the four domains and their task statements, which makes it the easiest book to pair with the domain table above.

Skip it if you want something you can finish in a fortnight. It sold for about $60 in October 2026; check the current price on Amazon.

Book and Sit SAA-C03

You book through an AWS Certification Account, which is separate from your AWS account and signs in with an AWS Builder ID. The scheduling rules are strict. You forfeit the fee if you cancel or reschedule inside 24 hours, miss the appointment, start an online exam more than 15 minutes late, or fail the system test:

  • First and last name in the account must match your ID exactly
  • Reschedule or cancel at least 24 hours ahead; each appointment allows two reschedules
  • Online: launch up to 30 minutes before your start time
  • Test center: arrive 15 to 30 minutes early with two primary IDs, or one primary and one secondary

Run Pearson VUE’s system test on the machine you’ll use for an online exam well before the day, because failing it at launch costs you the fee. The AWS Exam Demo on Pearson VUE’s AWS page shows the flag-for-review and review-screen workflow, so try it before your appointment.

After you pass, the next sensible step depends on your work: Solutions Architect Professional if you design systems, or the AWS AI Practitioner and Machine Learning Engineer path if your team is building on Bedrock, with your 50% discount applied either way.
