Granite pegmatite, Alstead field.

The Allen quarry is east of Cobb Hill Road. This road has been given several names, beginning with Forristall Road. The map below is an excerpt from a town map of Alstead published in 1892. At the crossroads where it begins in the lower-left is the residence of John P. Forristall. This intersection has been known as Forristall Four Corners, Forristall Corners and Four Corners. Midway up the road are two buildings belonging to Reuben Washburn. When Reuben died, Charles M. Washburn inherited the property. Six years after this map was published, John H. Allen purchased 245 acres from Charles M. Washburn on 15 November 1898 (Cheshire County Registry of Deeds [CCRD], Book 318 Page 18). The stream east of the road, Allen Brook, is named for the landowner.

John H. Allen was born in Canada to New Hampshire parents and lived in Alstead for many decades with his wife and large family (US Census for 1900, 1910, 1920, 1930 and 1940). On 30 September 1926, John H. Allen leased mineral rights on this property for a period of 20 years to the Golding-Keene Company (a New Hampshire mining company based in Keene) (CCRD, Book 428 Page 373). He renewed the lease in 1941 (CCRD, Book 494, Page 251). This explains the presence of the quarry on the 1930 USGS topo map (Bellows Falls Quad), the Modell (1931) reference to the quarry, the Frost (1934) reference, and the Cameron et al. (1954) reference to 1941 operations. John H. Allen passed ownership on to children John E., Harry E., Ola Mae {Blodgett} and Lee H. Allen on 28 August 1948 (CCRD, Book 547 Page 122).
