Famous burning coal dumps near St Etienne. These huge dumps (7 million tons of materials) came from the "Pigeot" shaft (closed in 1983) which was the deepest coal mine shaft (-1005,36 m) of the St Etienne area. The combustion is triggered by the exothermic oxidation of sulfides (pyrite and arsenopyrite) that burns the residual coal. Some gases rich in sulfur and arsenic from the combustion escape from fumaroles, where they deposit minerals by condensation. Today, these dumps are operated in a quarry by the SMTV company to make road gravels, therefore they will disappear by 2020…
Beware: access to this quarry is strongly denied due to proven risks of burns and collapses!
