Eclogites outcrop in a mountain slope close to the Sumdo village, where they form lenses, layers and irregular small bodies in sillimanite-kyanite grade gneisses of the Puga Formation of the Tso-Morari Crystalline Complex.

Detailed Mineral List:

โ“˜ Albite
Formula: Na(AlSi3O8)
Description: Occurs in albite/amphibole symplectites around omphacite grains.
โ“˜ Almandine
Formula: Fe2+3Al2(SiO4)3
Description: All six analyses of the eclogite garnet presented by Sachan et al. (1999) are almandines. The almandine is a main mineral in the eclogites. The garnet contains amphibole inclusions in the core, and omphacite and rutile inclusions near the rim.
โ“˜ 'Amphibole Supergroup'
Formula: AB2C5((Si,Al,Ti)8O22)(OH,F,Cl,O)2
Description: Amphiboles, together with omphacite and almandine are the dominant minerals in the eclogites. The amphiboles display strong chemical and textural variations within each sample. Blue alkali amphibole occurs mostly as small elongated or tabular clear crystals within or around fluid inclusion-bearing matrix clinopyroxenes. Some blue amphiboles were also observed in the mantle of garnets. The majority of amphiboles are strongly zoned. Amphiboles have formed at different PT regimes, with alkali-amphiboles formed at the highest pressure conditions (>7kbar) whereas tremolite/actinolite found in fractures in garnet formed at much lower pressures (<5kbar) during exhumation of the eclogites. Sachan et al.(1999) reports several exotic amphiboles normalizing to barroisite, taramite and nybรธite using the 1997 amphibole nomenclature. They provide no analysis for nybรธite, but the analysis provided for barroisite and taramite corresponds to winchite and katophorite respectively using the 2012 nomenclature.
โ“˜ 'Apatite'
Formula: Ca5(PO4)3(Cl/F/OH)
Description: Apaptite has been identified as an accessory mineral in the eclogite.
โ“˜ 'Biotite'
Formula: K(Fe2+/Mg)2(Al/Fe3+/Mg/Ti)([Si/Al/Fe]2Si2O10)(OH/F)2
Description: Biotite occurs as a minor accessory mineral in the eclogite.
โ“˜ 'Clinopyroxene Subgroup'
โ“˜ Clinozoisite
Formula: (CaCa)(AlAlAl)O[Si2O7][SiO4](OH)
Description: Accessory mineral in the eclogite matrix.
โ“˜ 'Garnet Group'
Formula: X3Z2(SiO4)3
โ“˜ Glaucophane
Formula: ◻[Na2][Mg3Al2]Si8O22(OH)2
โ“˜ Ilmenite
Formula: Fe2+TiO3
โ“˜ Katophorite
Formula: {Na}{CaNa}{Mg4Al}[(AlSi7)O22](OH)2
Description: Reported as taramite by Sachan et al.(1999), but with the changes implemented in the 2012 amphibole nomenclature, the composition is now classified as katophorite.
โ“˜ Muscovite
Formula: KAl2(AlSi3O10)(OH)2
โ“˜ Muscovite var. Phengite
Formula: KAl1.5(Mg,Fe)0.5(Al0.5Si3.5O10)(OH)2
Description: Phengite occurs mostly in the matrix and rarely as small inclusions in garnet.
โ“˜ Omphacite
Formula: (NaaCabFe2+cMgd)(AleFe3+fFe2+gMgh)Si2O6
Description: Sachan et al.(1999) provides 6 analyses of clinopyroxene from the eclogites, and all fall comfortably within the omphacite compositonal field. Omphacite occurs in the eclogite groundmass and as inclusions in the outer zones of the garnets.
โ“˜ Paragonite
Formula: NaAl2(AlSi3O10)(OH)2
โ“˜ Pargasite
Formula: NaCa2(Mg4Al)(Si6Al2)O22(OH)2
โ“˜ Quartz
Formula: SiO2
โ“˜ Rutile
Formula: TiO2
โ“˜ Winchite
Formula: ◻{CaNa}{Mg4Al}(Si8O22)(OH)2
Description: Reported as barroisite by Sachan et al.(1999), but with the changes implemented in the 2012 amphibole nomenclature, the composition is now classified as katophorite.
