The thorium occurrence is located in the northern part of the district. It is characterized by high concentrations of thorium in association with carbonate-quartz-plagioclase veins, which cut Pliensbachian shales; these are about 20-30 cm in thickness. Concentrations of Th in these veins vary from 31 to 3882 ppm. In addition to thorium, anomalous Bi (57- 4806 ppm) and Y (75 - 4345 ppm) are also recognized in the mineralized zone.

On the southern slope of the Greater Caucasus, the river Stori canyon (Kakheti) exposes fractured, cataclastic and mylonitized Lower Jurassic clay-shales, which at more than 3 km distance undergo intensive hydrothermal silicification, carbonization and sulphide mineralization. This process is particularly intensively revealed in brecciated zones, where sometimes thick sulphide ore lodes are formed. The studies carried out by us showed that this entire complex of rocks in the described hydrothermal alteration process was enriched with thorium and bismuth up to industrial concentration (Th-100-200 g/t; Bi-200-900 g/t).
