The uranium orebodies are primarily hosted in the lower Zhiluo Formation. The lower submember (J2z1-1) mainly consists of grey and grey-green sandstone interbedded with thin layers of mudstone. The sandstone varies from coarse to fine-grained and is primarily composed of medium to coarse-grained sandstone, forming multiple vertically positive rhythmic sedimentation cycles. The grey sandstones generally contain much carbonaceous debris and pyrite, serving as intrinsic reducing agents for the formation. The upper sub-member (J2z1-2) is mainly composed of green, light green, and light grey fine to coarse-grained sandstones, mudstones, and siltstones.
The Bayinqinggeli deposit is one of the largest uranium deposits that newly discovered in the northern Ordos Basin. It is located at โผ410 โ 510 m depth of the lower Zhiluo Formation. The lower Zhiluo Formation comprises upper (8.6โ91.9 m, ave. = 41 m) and lower sections (5.3โ114.1 m, ave. = 49.6 m), which are separated by impermeable siltstone to mudstone layers with variable thicknesses. There are two NS-trending uranium orebodies in the lower Zhiluo Formation at the Bayinqinggeli deposit. They are composed of gray and massive sandstone ores that are in gradual contact with the host rocks (altered and unaltered sandstones). The upper orebody is tabular in shape, 3.8 km long and 200โ1000 m wide with a thickness of 1.6โ15.6 m (ave. = 6.3 m), and has low- to medium-grade uranium (150โ560 ppm, ave. = 330 ppm). The lower orebody is crescent in shape, 200โ400 m wide with a thickness of 2.6โ6.8 m (ave. = 4.5 m). Its uranium mineralization is characterized by low-grade uranium at 180 to 360 ppm (ave. = 250 ppm). Mineralization in all ores is sparse, and the samples with high uranium concentrations are generally rare in this deposit.
