Uruachi is a village in the Mexican state of Chihuahua, close to the border with the state of Sonora. It serves as the municipal seat of the surrounding municipality of Uruachi. As of 2010, the town of Uruachi had a population of 1,199. Wikipedia
The locality is not certain. John White says in his article in Z. DT. Gemmol. Ges. 49/2, 2000: ... The locality is given as Cello, Chihuahua. Panczner (1967) lists a locality for strawberry quartz: Aventurera Mine, Municipio de la Ascencion, Chihuahua, but it is in northern Chihuahua and certainly not the same locality as Cello. It is widely suspected that this specimen (a crystal in the Smithsonian's collection) and others all were mined and sold originally by Manuel Ontiveros, of El Paso, Texas. If this is the same location, the material in the pocket was found about 4 km from Uruachic (sp?) in Chihuahua (Ontiveros, pers. comm., 1999). He and a Mexican, Ramiro Gonzales, claim to have exhausted the pocket in one visit to the site, which was so remote that they were flown in by a small airplane.
John White
Manuel Ontiveros was also known for making up stories. This may be the locality for the type of quartz called "strawberry" quartz. The inclusions that give it its distinctive "strawberry" color were thought for a long time to be rutile but were subsequently shown to be hematite. The hematite is aligned differently in the positive and negative rhododendron sections of the quartz termination (I hope I have described this accurately), and the resulting high dome cabochons cut from the terminations of the crystals give a stone that looks like a pie cut into six portions.
It was not a big find of specimens, and some, perhaps many of them, were cut into cabochons. The number that survive today in collections is quite small, and they should be considered quite rare.
