The Rieder Altenberg is a south-west slope on the edge of the Parndorfer Platte. Altenberg (Altberg) was the name given to the area that had been used for viticulture for a long time. The advantages of this good location were recognized very early on. The humus topsoil, A horizon 0-30 cm, is very slightly calcareous and characterized by a high proportion of gravel. In addition, this soil has a brownish transitional horizon, AB horizon 30-50 cm. The brown color is caused by weathering and the formation of new iron oxides. The starting material for soil formation, C horizon 50-135 cm, are about 7 million-year-old sediments. Numerous lime deposits (concretions) have formed as a result of weathering processes.
