Very little has been written about the history and geology of this granite pegmatite. The small workings consist of an upper and a lower quarry, it reportedly was first worked some time in the 19th century, and then in 1954 it was quarried for beryl. Nothing seems to have been done there since, other than specimen collecting. The information on mineralogy comes from collecting guides (mostly just lists), the most detail is given by Januzzi (1959), and private collections. It is now controlled by a local land conservation group.

The mineralogy and pegmatite zoning is similar in many ways to the nearby, and probably genetically related, Fillow quarry pegmatite, though it lacks lithophilite and its alterations.

Mineral List

15 valid minerals.

Detailed Mineral List:

โ“˜ Albite
Formula: Na(AlSi3O8)
Habit: anhedral
Colour: white
โ“˜ Albite var. Cleavelandite
Formula: Na(AlSi3O8)
Habit: tabular, radiating aggregates
Colour: white to pale blue
โ“˜ Bertrandite
Formula: Be4(Si2O7)(OH)2
Habit: micro crystals replacing beryl
Colour: colorless to pale gray or brown
Description: Found in voids formerly occupied by beryl crystals, rust-stained and associated with micro quartz. Heavy cleaning will reveal the bertrandite.
โ“˜ Beryl
Formula: Be3Al2(Si6O18)
Habit: hexagonal prismatic
Colour: cream to greenish
Description: Webster (1978) writes that quarry is noted for its beryl.
โ“˜ 'Columbite-(Fe)-Columbite-(Mn) Series'
Colour: black
Description: "Large crystals" (Januzzi 1959)
โ“˜ Fluorapatite
Formula: Ca5(PO4)3F
Colour: blue-green, lilac
Description: "The author has collected tiny lilac apatite crystals at the Ridgefield pegmatite off Ramapoo Road; as far as is known, these are the only apatites having this color that have been discovered in the Western Highlands of Connecticut." Januzzi (1994).
โ“˜ 'Garnet Group'
Formula: X3Z2(SiO4)3
Description: references provide no details, but occurrence plausible.
โ“˜ 'Lepidolite'
Habit: platy
Colour: lilac
Description: "the lepidolite occurs as small, lilac plates in cleavelandite but no granular masses were reported. It does not appear to be very plentiful at these two localities. The material was optically tested by Dr. Brian Mason, Curator of Mineralogy at the American Museum of Natural History, New York." Januzzi (1959)
โ“˜ Meta-autunite
Formula: Ca(UO2)2(PO4)2 · 6H2O
Habit: flaky encrustation
Colour: pale yellow
Fluorescence: green
Description: typically as pale yellow flakes and encrustations associated with uraninite or its other secondary minerals.
โ“˜ Microcline
Formula: K(AlSi3O8)
Description: References provide no details, but its presence is certain in a granite pegmatite.
โ“˜ Muscovite
Formula: KAl2(AlSi3O10)(OH)2
โ“˜ Opal
Formula: SiO2 · nH2O
Fluorescence: green
Description: References provide no details but it is common in Connecticut pegmatites.
โ“˜ Opal var. Opal-AN
Formula: SiO2 · nH2O
Fluorescence: green
Description: References provide no details but it is common in Connecticut pegmatites.
โ“˜ Pollucite ?
Formula: (Cs,Na)2(Al2Si4O12) · 2H2O
Description: "reported from the Ridgefield pegmatite although no confirmation of the find has been officially recorded" Januzzi (1959).
โ“˜ Quartz
Formula: SiO2
Habit: hexagonal prismatic
Colour: white to smoky
Description: Although common as anhedral masses, euhedral crystals are found in the rare pocket or as tiny crystals associated with bertrandite in cavities formed by the dissolution of beryl.
โ“˜ Schorl
Formula: NaFe2+3Al6(Si6O18)(BO3)3(OH)3(OH)
Habit: radiating acicular or stout prisms
Colour: very dark brown to black
Fluorescence: none
Description: radiating crystals to several cm, often in parallel pairs, found in quartz in contact with cleavelandite.
โ“˜ Spodumene
Formula: LiAlSi2O6
Habit: tabular, short prisms with dome termination
Colour: tan
Fluorescence: pale yellow to pale orange
Description: "The author has found a single specimen of spodumene at the Ridgefield Pegmatite โ€ฆ It is undoubtedly scarce" Januzzi (1959).
โ“˜ 'Stilbite Subgroup'
Formula: M6-7[Al8-9Si27-28O72] · nH2O
Description: References provides no details - presence reported by late noted collector Marcelle Weber.
โ“˜ 'Tourmaline'
Formula: AD3G6 (T6O18)(BO3)3X3Z
โ“˜ Uraninite
Formula: UO2
Colour: black
โ“˜ Uranophane
Formula: Ca(UO2)2(SiO3OH)2 · 5H2O

Colour: pale yellow-white
โ“˜ Zircon
Formula: Zr(SiO4)
โ“˜ Zircon var. Cyrtolite
Formula: Zr[(SiO4),(OH)4]
Habit: aggregates of curved prismatic crystals
Colour: brown
Description: "One large specimen [of cyrtolite], coated with uranium minerals, was found...by the author." Januzzi (1959). Occurs at the core of radiating cleavelandite crystals, in a similar mode of occurence as at the nearby Fillow quarry.
