Mine Montréal-Broughton, Sacré-Cœur-de-Jésus, MRC des Appalaches, Chaudière-Appalaches, Québec, Canada

Formerly: Montreal-Broughton Mine, East Broughton, Mégantic Co., Québec, Canada

The Montreal Broughton Mine is another part of asbestos deposits following the Pennington Sheet on a NE strike roughly parallel to route 112. The mine is an open pit located 1.2 km from Rt. 112 on the 9e Rang (road) in East Broughton. It is 2.4 km south west of the Fraser Mine. The open pit is to the left of the road, with extensive dumps to the right side. The open pit is 400 m x 60 m large and 20 m deep. It is dry and has easy acess. (however permission must be given. It is private property.)
This quarry like pit seems to expose rock from the Thetford mines ophiolitic Serpentinites, Steatite, and Talc carbonate schists. In this case the serpentinization caused chrysotile asbestos veins. Discovered in 1907, mining began in 1931 and asbestos and some steatite was mined sporadically. The dumps contain rock resembling the Rosaire Group, volcanic basic rock with chlorite and albite schists. Extensive albite veining was seen in the open pit.
