Located 1.2 km north of Westgate, at the head of Slitt Wood in Middlehope Burn, the Slitt Mine was a major lead producer during much of the 19th century. The main shaft accessed levels on the Slitt vein from the Three Yard Limestone down to the Whin Sill, below the Tynebottom Limestone. Closed and dismantled in 1878, the mine was never reopened for fluorspar. The site ruins may be seen along the Slitt Wood trail, leading up the burn from Westgate.
