The Middlehope Shield Mine was a major lead-producer during the first half of the 19th century. The main access was through White's Level, located on the east side of Middlehope Burn, approximately 2 km north of Westgate. In the fall of 1818 a large find of crystallized green fluorite occurred. Specimens from this occurrence can occasionally be found in modern collections, though often erroneously labeled as coming from the Heights Mine. Excellent examples of specimens from this find can be seen in the collections of the Natural History Museum, London, the National Museums of Wales, Cardiff, and the Hunterian Museum, Glasgow.
