Best ITIL Books for ITIL (Version 5) and ITIL 4 Foundation

Two ITIL Foundation exams are on sale at the same time right now, and the book you buy decides which one you’re ready for. ITIL (Version 5) arrived in early 2026 with its own Foundation exam, and ITIL 4 Foundation is still bookable. Amazon already lists dozens of “ITIL 5” study guides that have appeared since the launch. Most of them are self-published, one is priced at $130, and few say which syllabus they were checked against.

We split the best ITIL books by the exam each one targets: two for ITIL Foundation (Version 5) and three for ITIL 4 Foundation. Each list sets the official PeopleCert or AXELOS book against the third-party study guides written to it. We checked every edition, page count and publisher against Amazon’s catalog and the publishers’ own pages, and we left out the marketplace self-published titles. The official Version 5 book is not stocked by Amazon US, so it gets a direct link instead. Prices and stock below were checked in October 2026.

ITIL 5 or ITIL 4: which Foundation exam your book targets

ITIL exams don’t carry a code the way AWS or CompTIA exams do, so the exam name is the code you match a book against. A book for “ITIL Foundation (Version 5)” teaches the new syllabus, and a book for “ITIL 4 Foundation” teaches the old one. PeopleCert, which owns ITIL, writes the new name with the brackets. “ITIL 5” is shorthand you’ll see on third-party covers, not PeopleCert’s name for the exam. Both exams also share one format, which is why a wrong-version book is so easy to miss:

Exam formats from PeopleCert’s exam pages. The 31 December 2027 date is PeopleCert’s current plan; voucher validity dates for ITIL 4 had not been announced in October 2026.

What changed is mostly content, not shape. Version 5 keeps the guiding principles and the value system you’d recognise from ITIL 4. It adds an eight-stage product and service lifecycle (discover, design, acquire, build, transition, operate, deliver, support), regroups the practices, and treats AI as part of the core framework.

That overlap is the trap. An ITIL 4 book still teaches the principles and the value system correctly, so it feels familiar enough that you don’t notice the lifecycle model is missing until a question asks about it. PeopleCert’s ITIL (Version 5) FAQ lists the full set of changes and the retirement plan.

Quick picks for ITIL Foundation books

If you only want the answer, start from the exam you’re booked on and how you like to study. No pick is a marketplace self-published listing, and each cover names the ITIL version it is written for:

  • Taking ITIL Foundation (Version 5), want the source text: the official PeopleCert ITIL Foundation (Version 5) book, because PeopleCert writes the Version 5 questions from it.
  • Taking Version 5, want a full study guide next to it: Ultimate ITIL Version 5 Foundation Certification Guide by Sankarsan Biswas, the one trade-published third-party book for the new exam we found on sale to individual buyers.
  • Still on ITIL 4 Foundation: the AXELOS ITIL Foundation, ITIL 4 Edition for the syllabus, paired with the Morris and Gallacher ITIL 4 Foundation Exam Study Guide for practice.
  • ITIL 4 on a tight schedule: Become ITIL 4 Foundation Certified in 7 Days by Abhinav Krishna Kaiser, which reads like a short course rather than a reference.

We did not sit either exam for this guide. Instead, every pick had to pass three checks we could prove. The cover and the publisher’s description name the exam version. The publication date makes sense for that version. The book is not an “Independently published” marketplace listing. Edition, pages, publication date and stock came from Amazon’s product API on the day we checked (Amazon UK and Van Haren for the official Version 5 book), and PeopleCert’s own pages supplied the exam facts.

1. ITIL Foundation (Version 5), the official PeopleCert book

This is the book the Version 5 exam is built on, and it’s the one we’d buy first for ITIL Foundation (Version 5) or the Foundation Bridge. PeopleCert published it on 2 February 2026 as a 264-page A4 paperback (ISBN 978-9925391493). The cover carries the “Version 5” label and an “AI native” badge, so there’s no mistaking it for the ITIL 4 text.

Every Foundation topic is in it, and the topics that are new compared with ITIL 4 are the ones to read twice:

  • Product and service lifecycle: the eight lifecycle activities, from discovery to support. ITIL 4 books do not have it.
  • Value system and guiding principles: carried over from ITIL 4, so this part is revision if you hold the old certificate.
  • Management practices and value streams: regrouped, with value stream mapping covered at Foundation level.

PeopleCert wrote it as guidance rather than as exam prep, so it reads like a reference you’ll keep using at work. That is the reason to buy it, because PeopleCert’s question wording follows its definitions closely and a third-party paraphrase can drift from them.

Getting a copy is the awkward part. Amazon US doesn’t list it, and on Amazon UK PeopleCert sells the paperback through the marketplace at around £95. For print only, Van Haren’s store carries the same ISBN at a list price of about €119.

There is no standalone eBook on PeopleCert’s ITIL Foundation (Version 5) page: the official eBook and the Learning Resource Kit (a learner workbook and a quick reference guide) come inside the exam bundle, so that route only makes sense if you’re buying the voucher anyway.

Best for: anyone sitting the Version 5 exam, and ITIL 4 holders taking the Bridge. Where it falls short: it will not drill you for the paper. Pair it with pick 2, or with the official mock exam if you buy PeopleCert’s top eLearning+ tier, because guidance alone won’t tell you whether you’re ready.

2. Ultimate ITIL Version 5 Foundation Certification Guide

Sankarsan Biswas’s guide is the strongest third-party book for ITIL Foundation (Version 5) we found, mostly because it is the only one from an established publisher that’s sold to individual readers. Van Haren’s Version 5 courseware is the other trade title, and its listing restricts it to training partners and their students. Orange Education released it under its AVA imprint on 10 August 2026, six months after the official book, and it runs 497 pages.

It’s written as a certification guide, so it does what the official book doesn’t and walks through the syllabus as a course. The subtitle names the ground it covers: digital services, service value systems, governance and continual improvement. At nearly twice the length of the official text, it explains more than the syllabus needs. That helps if you’re new to service management and slows you down if you’re not.

His Amazon author bio lists ITIL Master among his credentials and describes him as an ITIL trainer. We could not confirm that independently, so judge the book on its sample pages rather than on the bio.

Pick it if you’re studying Version 5 on your own and want a longer explanation than the official text, at about $40. If you already hold ITIL 4 Foundation and only need the changes, the Bridge plus the official book is the shorter route. Read it alongside the official text, not instead of it, because PeopleCert’s own definitions are the ones that get tested. Check the current price on Amazon.

3. ITIL Foundation, ITIL 4 Edition

This is the official AXELOS text for ITIL 4 Foundation, and it’s still the right core book if you’re booked on the ITIL 4 exam before it retires. The Amazon US listing is the 212-page TSO printing. PeopleCert also sells its own printing of the same AXELOS guidance under a separate listing.

It carries the ITIL 4 service value system, the guiding principles, the four dimensions and the management practices, which is everything the ITIL 4 Foundation questions draw on. It is also the most expensive pick on Amazon US. It was over $100 on Amazon with stock flagged as scarce when we checked, so expect the price and availability to move.

Buy it if you’re booked on ITIL 4 Foundation and want the source definitions. If money is tight and your ITIL 4 date is close, pick 4 covers the same syllabus for about a third of the price. And if you haven’t booked yet, we’d skip it: ITIL 4 is scheduled to retire at the end of 2027, so a new candidate gets more from the Version 5 book. Check the current price on Amazon.

4. ITIL 4 Foundation Exam Study Guide, Second Edition

Helen Morris and Liz Gallacher’s guide is the best value for ITIL 4 Foundation, and the second edition is the one to buy. It was edited by Richard Webber and listed in November 2024 at 312 pages. Orgtopia is a small specialist imprint rather than a big trade house, so the case for this book rests on its authors and the PeopleCert ITIL 4 Foundation mark on its cover.

The cover promises practice exam questions and real-world case studies. That is where it earns its place next to the official book, because it turns definitions into the scenario-style questions ITIL 4 Foundation uses. At about $35, it is the cheapest way to cover ITIL 4 Foundation well.

Buy it if you’re an ITIL 4 candidate who learns from practice questions. Check that the cover says Second Edition when you order, because older printings still turn up from third-party sellers. Leave it on the shelf if you’re taking Version 5, since it predates the new lifecycle model and the AI content entirely. Check the current price on Amazon.

5. Become ITIL 4 Foundation Certified in 7 Days

Abhinav Krishna Kaiser’s Apress book is the one to grab if you’ve got a week, not a month. The second edition, from November 2020, is organised as a short course with real-life examples. It also covers how ITIL 4 sits next to DevOps, which most Foundation books skip.

Kaiser writes from the practitioner side, so incident, change and problem management come with the kind of examples you’d meet running a service desk. That makes it the easiest ITIL 4 book here to read cover to cover. The trade-off is depth. It is built to get you through Foundation fast, so it’s a weaker reference afterwards than the official text.

We’d hand it to a working engineer whose ITIL 4 date is too close for a long guide to get finished. It is the wrong buy if you want one book that lasts beyond Foundation, or if you’re on Version 5. It sells for about $40 to $45. Check the current price on Amazon.

How to spot an ITIL 5 book you shouldn’t trust

The Version 5 launch set off a flood of quick study guides, and Amazon’s search ranks them right next to the real ones. We pulled the first 50 Amazon US results for “ITIL 5 Foundation” and found 27 Version 5 titles dated 2026. Only 4 of those came from established publishers (Orange Education and Van Haren). The other 23 were self-published or from micro-imprints, including a 45-page guide and a $130 “exam review”.

You can catch most of them on the product page before you pay:

  • The publisher field says “Independently published” or is blank: that is a self-published book. Some are fine, but you’re taking the author’s word for the syllabus coverage.
  • It was published before 2 February 2026: the official Version 5 text was not out yet, so the author was writing from previews at best.
  • The description talks about ITIL 4 content: Van Haren’s ITIL 5 Foundation Courseware listing leads with the Service Value System, which reads like ITIL 4-era copy, and says the product is only for courseware partners, affiliates or designated students. A recycled-sounding blurb doesn’t prove a book is wrong, but it means the listing tells you little about the syllabus.
  • The title promises “2026-2027” or a pass guarantee: the date range is a search keyword, not a syllabus version. PeopleCert’s real exam name is “ITIL Foundation (Version 5)”.

The same trap runs the other way for ITIL 4. Those books stay on sale with years of five-star reviews, earned on an exam that is now on a retirement schedule. Read the exam name on the cover before the star rating. It’s the same habit we recommend in our AWS certification book guide, where a renamed exam left a shelf of retired study guides still selling.

ITIL 4 or Version 5: which exam to book now

For most people starting from zero, we’d book ITIL Foundation (Version 5). It is the current exam and has the same format as ITIL 4. An ITIL 4 certificate earned now still comes up for renewal every three years, against a framework that’s being retired. The exceptions depend on where you already are:

  • You’re new to ITIL: take Version 5 with picks 1 and 2.
  • You already hold ITIL 4 Foundation (or another ITIL 4 certification, except the Cloud and Sustainability specialist ones): take the 20-question Foundation Bridge (Version 5) with pick 1. It covers only what changed and awards the Version 5 Foundation certificate. PeopleCert’s Bridge exam bundle already includes the official eBook, and its page says results are not released without proof of completion, so check that requirement before you book.
  • Your employer has already booked you on ITIL 4: sit it with picks 3 and 4, or pick 5 if time is short, while ITIL 4 vouchers are still honoured.
  • Your ITIL 4 certificate is up for renewal: PeopleCert renews it when you pass any Version 5 certification, so if you’re eligible for the Bridge, it doubles as your renewal.

ITIL reads better once you’ve seen it in a ticketing tool, because incident, problem and change management are easier to remember as screens than as definitions. If you have a spare VM, install GLPI on Ubuntu for a service desk and asset inventory. Zammad on Ubuntu and osTicket on Rocky Linux are lighter helpdesks. For configuration management, our i-doit CMDB guide gives you a real configuration database to map the service value chain onto.

Where each ITIL book falls short

No single book covers everything. This is the trade-off you accept with each pick, side by side:

BookExam it targetsPublisherWhere it falls short

If you only buy one book, buy the official text for the exam you’re booked on. Add a study guide only if you need practice. That’s the split we’d make for any certification run by a single body, and it’s the logic behind our PMP book picks too. The official guide defines the answers, and the third-party book teaches you to find them under time pressure.
