Best PMP Books for the New 2026 PMP Exam

Every PMP book on Amazon right now falls into one of two piles. One pile was written for the exam PMI launched in July 2026. The other teaches the exam it replaced, and it’s often cheaper, better reviewed, and just as “in stock”. The covers rarely tell you which pile you are looking at.

That matters more than usual this cycle. The new exam content outline moved Business Environment from 8% of the exam to 26%, so a book written for the old outline under-teaches the domain that is now about a quarter of the paper. We picked six books for the new exam and listed the old editions that still sit next to them. Exam facts come from PMI’s 2026 exam content outline, and prices and editions from live Amazon listings.

Current as of October 2026.

What changed on the new PMP exam

PMI says it updated the PMP exam in July 2026. PMTraining, a PMI Premier Authorized Training Partner, puts the switch on 9 July, with the 2021 outline retiring the same day. Here’s how the three domains moved, from PMI’s new exam page and the outline itself.

Domain2026 outline2021 outline
People33%42%
Process41%50%
Business Environment26%8%

The task list shrank from 35 to 26, and the approach mix shifted too. PMI says about 40% of questions are predictive and the other 60% are split between agile and hybrid. That 60% is agile and hybrid together, not agile on its own. Some publisher copy still says “about half”, which was the old exam.

The format is still 180 questions in 240 minutes, with 170 scored and 10 unscored. PMI flags case study sets and graphic based questions as new item types, and the exam also includes practicum items that hand you tools or data to work with. PMI also names AI and sustainability as new themes. The exam costs $425 for PMI members and $675 for everyone else, per PMI’s own page.

One point catches people out. You need 35 hours of project management training to apply, and PMI’s outline says books and practice exams alone do not count toward it. The rules tighten on 1 December 2026: from then, live instructor-led hours, in person or virtual, count only if a PMI Authorized Training Partner or an eligible academic program delivers them, while self-paced courses can still come from any provider. Training finished before that date stays eligible. Keep that in mind when you compare prices, because only one book below comes with an eligible course.

The six PMP books compared

Every pick was written for the 2026 outline or is a current PMI standard behind it. These are books, so the checks are publisher pages, PMI’s documents, and the live listings, not a lab. Prices move often, so treat each band as a starting point.

If you only buy one, buy Ramdayal for the bundled course, or Mulcahy if you already have your 35 hours.

1. PMP Exam Prep, 12th Edition by Rita Mulcahy

RMC’s long-running teaching text, rebuilt for the new exam. RMC published the 12th edition on 3 August 2026, and it is the first Mulcahy edition built around the 2026 outline.

The cover says it is aligned with the PMBOK Guide, Eighth Edition, and the current exam content outline. RMC says it maps the outline’s tasks to PMBOK 8’s focus areas, and it pulls in PMI’s process guidance as well. RMC pitches the book as “Learn It, Don’t Just Memorize It”, which is the right goal for a situational exam. At 592 pages it is a full course in print. It’s printed on demand, so each copy is printed when you order it.

Where it falls short: it is the priciest pick here, and it doesn’t include the 35 hour course. Make sure the cover says 12th edition. The 11th edition, “2023 Exam Ready”, is still on sale for more money and teaches the old outline. Around $70 to $100.

2. PMP Exam Prep Simplified by Andrew Ramdayal

For most people, this is the best value on the shelf. It is one of the bestselling PMP books on Amazon, and the 2026 update is the only pick that also covers the 35 hour training requirement.

The cover says “Updated for the 2026 PMP Exam” and “Based on PMBOK 8th Edition”. The Amazon listing says the book includes six months of TIA’s 35 hour e-learning course, with a certificate you can use on your PMP application. You also get more than 400 questions in the book and over 1,100 online. The listing also highlights his PMP Mindset training for situational questions.

Two things to check before you buy. Choose the offer that is sold and shipped by Amazon.com. Ramdayal warns on the listing that third party copies may be outdated and may not include valid course access. The listing also still shows a January 2021 date, because it was updated in place, so go by the cover image, not the date.

The catch: it is self-published, and the course access depends on buying the Amazon.com copy. Around $43 to $50.

3. PMBOK Guide, Eighth Edition by PMI

PMI published the eighth edition in November 2025. It is the current standard behind the exam, though not the exam itself.

PMBOK Guide Eighth Edition and The Standard for Project Management by PMI book cover

That distinction is PMI’s, not ours. The 2026 outline says the exam isn’t written from any single text, and that the outline and the PMBOK Guide have “noticeable differences”. So the PMBOK is a reference to check terms against, not a study plan. It sets out six principles and seven performance domains, brings back process guidance, and expands coverage of AI, PMOs, and procurement.

Where it falls short: it does not teach the exam, and PMI members can download it free. If you’re joining PMI for the member exam price, you may not need the print copy. The Amazon buy box is often a third party seller at well below list. The seventh edition is still sold, and it often costs more than the eighth. Around $55 to $120.

4. The PMP Exam: How to Pass on Your First Try, Eighth Edition by Andy Crowe

Velociteach released Crowe’s eighth edition on 1 June 2026, aligned with the 2026 exam update. It is a good second explanation when Mulcahy or Ramdayal doesn’t click.

The cover promises all new content and new questions, plus a practice exam. At 396 pages it is far shorter than the seventh edition, which ran to 840. Velociteach also sells an eight page laminated Quick Reference Guide, also an eighth edition, that pairs with it for the final week.

Watch for: availability. Amazon.com didn’t sell it directly when we checked, and Amazon’s reported prices for it differed by about a quarter depending on where we looked. The seventh edition is still in stock and looks like the bigger book, but it teaches the 2021 outline. Around $50 to $70.

5. PMP Exam Prep For Dummies, 2nd Edition by Crystal J. Richards

The budget pick. Wiley published the second edition on 18 August 2026, and it is often the cheapest current PMP book you can buy new.

PMP Exam Prep For Dummies 2nd Edition by Crystal J. Richards book cover

Wiley says this edition follows the PMBOK Guide, Eighth Edition, including its principles, focus areas, performance domains, and new material on AI, PMO governance, and sustainability. It comes with an online practice question bank. The plain Dummies style suits readers who are new to formal project management.

Where it falls short: it is lighter than the top picks. Wiley’s copy says about half the exam tests agile, which understates PMI’s 60% agile and hybrid figure. Watch the edition too. The first edition from April 2025 teaches the old outline and has sold at the same price. Around $23 to $42.

6. Agile Practice Guide, Second Edition by PMI and Agile Alliance

This is not an exam book. It’s on the list because 60% of the exam is agile or hybrid, and this is PMI’s own guide to both.

Agile Practice Guide Second Edition by PMI and Agile Alliance book cover

PMI and Agile Alliance published the second edition on 23 July 2026, aligned with PMBOK 8. At 198 pages it is short enough to read in a weekend. It’s a good fit for readers coming from traditional project roles who have never run a sprint. If your team already uses Scrum, our guide to running Scrum with remote teams covers the day to day side.

The downside: no practice questions, and the first edition from 2017 is much cheaper and far better reviewed. That’s the one most buyers land on. Buy the second edition for the new exam. Around $45 to $65.

Old PMP editions still on sale

These all teach the 2021 outline or older, and every one was still orderable new when we checked. Several cost more than their replacement.

The Sybex line has a new author and a new edition coming. Kristian Bainey’s PMP Study Guide, Eleventh Edition: 2026 Exam Update is due on 17 November 2026 and is a pre-order until then. We will look at it once it ships.

You’ll also find dozens of “PMP 2026” practice books with no established publisher. Some carry a new year in the title over old content. Practice questions already come with Mulcahy, Ramdayal, Crowe, and Dummies, so we’d skip an unknown title unless you’ve run out of questions.

Where each PMP book falls short

No single book covers everything, so the real choice is which gap you can live with.

BookMain gapFill it with
Mulcahy 12thNo 35 hour course, highest priceA separate 35 hour course
RamdayalSelf-published, course tied to the Amazon.com copyMulcahy or Crowe for a second explanation

Agile Practice Guide 2ndNo questionsAny exam book with a question bank

For most first time candidates, we’d pick Ramdayal for the course and the questions, then add Mulcahy if a domain still feels weak. If you’ve already done the 35 hours elsewhere, Mulcahy alone covers the new outline, per RMC, in a book it says has helped PMP candidates for more than 25 years. If you are studying certifications on the IT side as well, see our CISA book guide. And if you’d rather practice on a real tool, Plane, OpenProject, and Taiga are all free to self-host.
