Many of the CAPM books on Amazon were written for an exam that no longer exists. PMI rebuilt the Certified Associate in Project Management exam in 2023, adding agile and business analysis as full domains. The older prep books that still turn up in search teach the plan-driven exam it replaced. If you’re buying a CAPM book now, the first thing to check is not the reviews, it is whether the book names the 2023 exam or its 2023 outline.
We picked six CAPM books and study guides that match the current exam: three full prep books from Pearson, RMC and McGraw Hill, the two PMI practice guides behind the agile and business analysis domains, and a cheap laminated card for the last week. Each pick has its edition, page count and publisher checked against Amazon’s catalog, and against the publisher’s page wherever one would load, and we left out the self-published “CAPM 2026” titles that flood the results. Prices, editions and stock below were checked in October 2026.
Which CAPM book to buy first
For most people, the official cert guide is the right first book, because it’s PMI-authorized and it ships with two full practice exams. The other picks earn their place by covering something it does less well, so start from how you study rather than from the bestseller badge:
- Best overall: CAPM Exam Official Cert Guide (Pearson). It’s PMI-authorized, written for the 2023 exam, and includes two practice exams in the Pearson test engine.
- Best teaching text: Rita Mulcahy’s CAPM Exam Prep, Fifth Edition. It explains the reasoning behind each answer better than anything else here, but it is also the most expensive book on the list.
- Most practice questions per dollar: CAPM All-in-One Exam Guide (McGraw Hill), with over 450 questions and the lowest price of the three prep books.
- For the 27% business analysis domain: PMI’s Business Analysis for Practitioners, Second Edition.
- For the 20% agile domain: PMI’s Agile Practice Guide.
- Final week review: the QuickStudy CAPM laminated guide, which costs about as much as lunch.
If you only buy one, buy the Pearson guide. Add Mulcahy if you learn better from explanations than from question drills, and add the two PMI guides only if your practice scores stay low on agile or business analysis.
What the CAPM exam covers now
The CAPM still runs on the outline PMI released in 2023, and PMI’s CAPM certification page lists the same four domains and weights in October 2026. That matters because the PMBOK Guide, Eighth Edition is now on sale, and it is easy to assume the CAPM moved with it. We found no announcement of a new CAPM outline tied to PMBOK 8, so a book aligned with the 2023 outline is still the right match.
| Domain | Share of the CAPM | Book that covers it best |
|---|---|---|
| Project management fundamentals and core concepts | 36% | Official Cert Guide, Mulcahy |
| Predictive, plan-based methodologies | 17% | Any of the three prep books |
| Agile frameworks and methodologies | 20% | Agile Practice Guide |
| Business analysis frameworks | 27% | Business Analysis for Practitioners |
Read that table the other way round and the problem with older books is plain: agile and business analysis together are 47% of the CAPM, and neither was a domain of its own before 2023. A 2018 CAPM book can still teach the process groups well, but it leaves you guessing on almost half the paper.
PMI lists the format details you will plan your study around:
- Length: 150 questions in 3 hours, of which 15 are unscored pretest items you cannot tell apart from the rest.
- Eligibility: a secondary degree and 23 hours of project management education completed before you sit it.
- Cost: $225 for PMI members and $300 for everyone else, with up to three attempts a year.
- Renewal: 15 professional development units every three years.
None of the books below includes a course that covers those 23 hours, so budget for it separately. PMI’s own on-demand CAPM Exam Prep course covers them, and so do instructor-led courses from PMI Authorized Training Partners. If you already manage projects and could apply for the PMP instead, our PMP book guide covers the 2026 PMP exam, which needs 35 hours of training plus documented project experience. Per PMI’s PMP outline, an active CAPM waives the 35 hours.
The six CAPM books compared
Each column is something that changes which book you should buy: whether it targets the 2023 outline, how much practice it gives you, and what it costs. Price bands come from the live Amazon listings and move often, so treat them as a guide.
| Book | Role | Pages | Practice | Price band |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| CAPM Exam Official Cert Guide (Pearson, 2023) | Main prep book | 528 | 2 full practice exams online, chapter quizzes | $40 to $60 |
| Rita Mulcahy’s CAPM Exam Prep, 5th ed (RMC, 2023) | Teaching text | 408 | Chapter quizzes | $70 to $100 |
| CAPM All-in-One Exam Guide (McGraw Hill, 2023) | Question drill | 500 | 450+ questions, print and online | $30 to $50 |
| Business Analysis for Practitioners, 2nd ed (PMI) | Domain reference | 206 | None | $20 to $25 |
| Agile Practice Guide (PMI, 2017) | Domain reference | 210 | None | $20 to $50 |
| QuickStudy CAPM Exam Test Prep (2024) | Review card | 6 | None | $13 to $15 |
The three prep books overlap heavily, so you rarely need more than two of them. The PMI guides are cheap, short and written by the body that sets the CAPM, which makes them the cheapest way to shore up a weak domain once your practice scores show you where it is.
1. CAPM Exam Official Cert Guide
We’d pick this one if you only buy one CAPM book. Pearson published it in May 2023 for the redesigned exam, and InformIT describes it as a PMI-authorized self-study resource written by Vijay Kanabar, Arthur Thomas and Thomas Lechler.

It’s built the way Pearson’s IT cert guides are built, which suits the CAPM well. Chapters open with a “Do I Know This Already?” quiz so you can skip what you know, and the 528 pages cover all four domains. The practice is what you’re paying for: two full practice exams in the Pearson Test Prep engine, plus key-term flash cards, chapter review exercises and a study planner on the companion site. The Premium Edition eBook includes four practice exams, two more than the print book, if you want a larger pool.
Where it falls short: the explanations are terse next to Mulcahy’s, and two practice exams run out fast if you take them early. Pearson also posts a corrected answer key for Chapter 2 on its CAPM update page, so check it before you mark yourself wrong. Around $40 to $60.
2. Rita Mulcahy’s CAPM Exam Prep, Fifth Edition
Mulcahy’s book is the best pick if you’re new to project management and want the ideas explained, not just tested. RMC released the fifth edition in June 2023, and its cover says it is aligned with the 2023 outline and the PMBOK Guide, Seventh Edition.

That PMBOK 7 alignment looks dated now that the eighth edition is out, but it is not a problem for this exam. The CAPM outline dates from 2023, when the seventh edition was current, so the book and the CAPM outline describe the same body of knowledge. RMC says the fifth edition integrates material from PMI’s Agile Practice Guide and Business Analysis for Practitioners, and it adds chapter quizzes in the newer question formats (matching and hot spot items among them).
Weigh three trade-offs before paying RMC’s price:
- Price: it is the most expensive pick at around $70 to $100, roughly double the Pearson guide.
- Practice: the book has chapter quizzes but no full-length practice exams; RMC’s exam simulator, with more than 1,200 questions, is a separate purchase.
- Edition check: earlier Mulcahy CAPM editions were written for the old exam, so make sure the cover says Fifth Edition and 2023 ECO.
Pair it with the All-in-One guide if you want the Mulcahy teaching without paying for the simulator.
3. CAPM All-in-One Exam Guide
McGraw Hill’s All-in-One wins on practice per dollar. James Lee Haner wrote it for the 2023 exam objectives, and it carries over 450 practice questions with explanations, split between the book and an online test bank.

Two extras make it more useful than the page count suggests. An appendix called “50 Confusing Terms” separates the pairs that trip up new candidates, the kind of distinction a situational question hinges on. The book also includes a laminated trifold memory card for quick review, and the online side adds flash cards and word puzzles. At 500 pages and around $30 to $50, it is the cheapest of the three full prep books.
The catch: Amazon lists stock as limited, so check the price before you order, and the teaching is lighter than Mulcahy’s. It works best as a second book next to the Pearson guide or Mulcahy rather than as your only text. Don’t confuse it with McGraw Hill’s 2018 CAPM Practice Exams book, which predates the redesign.
4. Business Analysis for Practitioners, Second Edition
Business analysis is 27% of the CAPM, more than agile, and in our reading it’s the domain where the prep books lean hardest on PMI’s own guide. PMI’s own practice guide is the cheapest fix, at 206 pages and usually under $25.

PMI didn’t write it as an exam book, and that is the point. The guide explains how requirements are elicited, analyzed and traced in PMI’s own vocabulary, which is the vocabulary the CAPM’s business analysis questions are written in. RMC names it as one of the sources behind that domain. You’ll get more from it after the prep book’s business analysis chapter than before, because by then you know which terms you keep missing.
Who can pass on it: there are no questions and no exam mapping, so it cannot stand on its own. If you work as a business analyst already, you can probably skip it and rely on the prep book. Around $20 to $25.
5. Agile Practice Guide
For the 20% agile domain, PMI’s Agile Practice Guide, written with the Agile Alliance, is the reference RMC names as a source. We link the 2017 first edition here because it is the one that was current when the 2023 CAPM outline was written.
PMI released a second edition in July 2026, aligned with PMBOK 8. It’s the better book for the new PMP exam, but for the CAPM it costs well over twice as much and follows PMBOK 8 rather than the standards the CAPM was written against. At 210 pages, the first edition covers Scrum, Kanban, servant leadership and hybrid approaches in plain language, and it is short enough to read in a weekend.
Watch the price: Amazon shows the first edition’s stock as limited, and its list price is $49 even though Amazon usually sells it for far less. If the price jumps, the agile chapters in the Pearson guide or Mulcahy are enough for most candidates. Around $20 to $50.
6. QuickStudy CAPM Exam Test Prep
QuickStudy’s laminated guide is a review card, not a study book, and at under $15 it is the cheapest thing on this list. Aileen Ellis wrote it, and BarCharts published it in 2024 as a six-page laminated folding guide.
Save it for the last week, when you want the domain-by-domain terms on one sheet you can scan on a commute. Use it to check recall, and go back to your main book for anything you can’t explain from the card alone.
Its limit: six laminated pages can’t teach a 150-question exam, and if you buy the All-in-One you already get a trifold memory card in the box. Around $13 to $15.
CAPM books we left out
Several books rank well for “CAPM book” and still didn’t make the list. Each was left out for a reason you can check on the listing yourself:
- Pre-2023 CAPM books: McGraw Hill’s CAPM Practice Exams (2018) and Wiley’s combined PMP and CAPM workbook (2017) were written before the redesign, so they don’t cover agile or business analysis as domains.
- The PMBOK Guide, Eighth Edition: it is PMI’s current standard, but it postdates the CAPM outline, it lists at $119, and PMI members can read the PMBOK Guide free.
- Test-prep publisher practice books: titles such as Mometrix’s CAPM practice tests (2025) are current, but we couldn’t check their questions against the outline, so we’d use them only as extra drill.
- Self-published “CAPM 2025-2026” guides: dozens appeared after the redesign, most without a named publisher or a stated outline version.
Check the copyright page and the cover of any CAPM book first. A current one names the 2023 exam or ECO; one that only says “PMBOK Guide, Sixth Edition” was written for the old exam, whatever its listing says.
Pick a CAPM book by how you study
The right stack depends less on the books than on what you bring to them. Find your situation below and buy that combination, not all six:
- You’re a student or new to project work: Mulcahy to learn the ideas, then the Pearson guide’s two practice exams to test them.
- You already work on projects and learn by doing questions: the Pearson guide plus the All-in-One for its 450 questions.
- You’re on a tight budget: the All-in-One alone, and consider PMI membership only if the $75 exam discount plus the free PMBOK Guide outweigh the membership fee.
- Your practice scores lag on one domain: add the matching PMI guide, Agile Practice Guide or Business Analysis for Practitioners, instead of another prep book.
The CAPM is often a first step toward the PMP. The two share PMI’s vocabulary but not the same outline, so a CAPM book won’t carry you through the PMP later. If you work in IT, ITIL Foundation is the entry-level certification on that side, and it pairs naturally with a CAPM if you run projects inside an IT team. If you’d like to practice the scheduling and tracking side on real software while you study, a self-hosted tool such as OpenProject on Debian, Redmine on Ubuntu or Plane gives you a sandbox for Gantt charts, backlogs and issue tracking.
