A former Cr mine located in the SWยผ & SEยผ sec. 9 and in the NWยผNEยผ sec. 16, T1N, R13E, MDM, 2.3 km (1.4 miles) SE of Mountain Top (coordinates of record), in the French Creek area, about 5 miles SE of Copperopolis, on Bureau of Land Management administered land (patented (?) land) (located claim). Discovered and first operated in 1918. MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 100 meters.
The ore body strikes N30W and dips 35N at a thickness of 1 meter, width of 5 meters, length of 20 meters (which of several ore bodies ??). One ore body is disseminated, tabular and a second is irregular. The primary mode of origin is magmatic differentiation. Primary ore control was lithology. Wallrock alteration is intense (carbonitization). Scattered deposits, mostly irregular lenses of chromite, some in gray dunite, some in leached serpentine, ranging from low- to high-grade ore. Small amounts of talc, magnesite and malachite are present in several of the deposits. Local rocks include ultramafic rocks, chiefly Mesozoic, unit 2 (Western Sierra Nevada and Klamath Mountains).
Workings include surface and underground openings comprised of numerous shafts, small pits and open cuts.
Production was probably not less than 400 long tons. Reserves are small.
Analytical data results: Ore averages 34 to 42% Cr2O3 (Cater, 1948). The average minable grade of chromite is 38%.
