A former Au mine located in secs. 25 & 36, T7N, R10E, MDM, 0.6 km (0.4 mile) N of Amador City, and about 4 miles S of Plymouth, on private land. Discovered in 1853. Property consists of 76 acres. Operated by the Bunker Hill Mining Co., C/O D. C. Crandall. First worked in 1853. MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 100 meters. May be the shaft shown in the SW¼SE¼, sec. 25 on the USGS quadrangle Sutter Creek, California map 1957).
Mineralization is a vein deposit hosted in andesite and slate. The ore body is pinch & swell in form, strikes NW and dips NE at a thickness of 1.83 meters and a width of 243.84 meters. Greenstone is meta-andesite. The principal vein is the Bunker Hill, or hanging wall vein. Other veins include the Gouge vein and the Last Chance vein, which lie in the footwall. The vein is a quartz-greenstone vein averaging 5½ feet in thickness. Some black slate is heavily charged with pyrite and some arsenopyrite. The footwall is slate and the hanging wall is meta-andesite. There are veins in both the hanging wall and footwall. Slate and greenstone are interbedded in places and the greenstone is altered to schist. Ore occurs in crushed slate gouge veins, quartz stringers and large bodies of quartz. Ore in the quartz-greenstone veins is associated with up to 4% pyrite. Local alteration includes greenstone-quartz ore formed by hydrothermal alteration of greenstone. Local rocks include Jurassic marine rocks, unit 1 (Western Sierra Nevada and Western Klamath Mountains).
Workings include underground openings with an overall depth of 1,036.32 meters. They are comprised of a 2,800 foot shaft with a winze to the 3,400 foot level. Major stoping was conducted above the 2,400 foot level. The ore was mined by the square-set stope and later shrinkage stoping methods.
During the 1860's and 1870's ore yielding from $50 to $75 (period values) per ton produced. The Bunker Hill Consolidated Mining Co. organized in 1899 and operated steadily until 1922, producing 887,585 tons of ore which yielded $3,834,550 (period values). The mine has been idel since 1922 except for a small amount of work in 1925. A total of $5,154,382 (period values) of Au was produced.
