The southernmost expression of the southern massif (and the New Caledonia ophiolite) occurs on Ouen Island. The central–western part of the island hosts a unit of strongly serpentinized mantle harzburgites with a tectonite structure. The base of this unit is represented by a tectonic mĂ©lange that comprises altered gabbros within a serpentinite-rich matrix, with frequent intrusions and dikes of plagiogranite. The central–eastern part (around Baie Tranquille) hosts mantle harzburgites that transition upward into interlayered dunite–wehrlite, which further grades into wehrlite with gabbro intervals and minor chromitite bodies. These chromitite bodies are hosted by layered plagioclase-bearing wehrlite and occur as small pods, irregular bodies, or schlieren up to 1 m long and less than 0.5 m thick. The chromitites contain numerous small (<20 ”m across) particles of PGMs.
