Botro del Confine (Sistema filoniano della La Sassa), La Sassa, Montecatini Val di Cecina, Provincia di Pisa, Toscana, Italia
Mine workings (1875-1973) on a mixed sulphide vein along Botro del Confine, near Casalone. The ore mineralization, consisting of main sphalerite and galena, in a dolomite-quartz gangue extends along Botro del Confine to ca. 250 m, eastwards to Scopicci and westwards to Aia all’Assenzio. It is considered the southernmost part of the La Sassa vein system. Related to hydrothermal activity is also the strong silicization affecting various rock types in this area.
Field work, undertaken in 1987-1988 by the company RIMIN in this area, indicated the presence of gold up to ca. 100 ppb and Ag traces.
The first record on mining activity (Ag and other metals) near La Sassa dates back to 1273 (Municipal Historical Archives of Volterra). According to Lotti (1898 and 1910) the La Sassa vein system, mainly consisting of quartz and calcite with disseminated microcrystals of pyrite and sphalerite, evolved in its southern part into a sphalerite-galena mineralization embedded in "ferruginous calcareous tufa", originated from hydrothermal alteration of limestones. Lotti localized the main mineralized areas near Botro dei Catini (aka Botro di Catine), at Porcarecce di Campofico, Aia all’Assenzio, and in Botro Rivivo.
