CHROME STAR
Year discovered: 1904
Comment - morphology: The generalized zone recognized by Jourdain (1994) has an average width of 3 metres and an apparent length of approximately 15 metres. The generalization is in irregular lenses of varying orientation.
Location Reference: The UTM coordinates (GM 58649) of an old shaft locates this showing approximately 600 metres NNE of Petit lac Saint-François.
Discovery comments: The year of discovery is not known. The operating date of this old pit, 10 m by 4 m by 1-2 m deep, is reported as 1904 (GM 52635).
Comment - lithology: The former Star Chrome Mine is located in a bed sequence where pyroxenites and wehrlites dominate (towards the top of the ophiolitic sequence). It is located in the Mont Adstock Massif, in the Thetford Mines Ophiolitic Complex. This deposit is hosted in a pyroxenite, wehrlite, wehrlitic dunite assemblage. The majority of outcrops consist of dark pyroxenite (clinopyroxenite) with a massive appearance and, in places, a rhythmic bandage marked by variations in pyroxene content. The mineralized zone consists of 20% massive chromite, 10% dunite, 30% orthopyroxenite and 40% clinopyroxenite. The chromite veins intersect the pyroxenite and surround dunite and orthopyroxenite nodules (chain texture) or isolate them completely (nodular or anti-nodular texture). Clinopyroxenite is green and composed mainly of diopside. Orthopyroxenite is beige, composed of enstatite and bronzite, and generally occurs in centimetric bands parallel to the chromite veins. The dunite is dark and in millimetre to centimetre beds within the pyroxenite.
Comment - Mineralization: Mineralization consists of massive fine-grained (1 mm) chromite that occurs in irregular lenses up to 10 cm thick (GM 52635). The massive chromite occurs as more or less continuous and brecciated centimetric to decimetric veins in dunite and orthopyroxite (GM 54226). Disseminated chromite is also found in clinopyroxenite. Platinum group elements are mostly contained in complex alloys in the b ordure of chromite grains.
