Volcanic Field covers c. 2000kmยฒ and 46 volcanic centres have been recognised (Stephenson 1989). The field comprises a number of lava shields, numerous pyroclastic and composite cones, and lava plains with individual flows up to 100 km long. The country rocks are Proterozoic metamorphic rocks, folded Paleozoic sediments, granites and Jurassic sedimentary rocks.
