A 50,000-year-old meteorite impact crater located in the centre sec. 13, T19N, R12+E, G&SRM, 29.7 km (18.45 mi) W of Winslow. The crater is privately owned by the Barringer family through their Barringer Crater Company. The claims extend into the N½ sec. 24.

NOTE: Species listed on this page are either terrestrial occurrences that pre-existed the meteoric impact or are the results of the meteorite impact. Additional species are listed under the Canyon Diablo meteorite, which impacted the earth here. Those species occur in the meteorite itself and are distributed within and beyond the crater.

To see an aggregated list of all species, click up to the 'Meteor Crater area' level.

Detailed Mineral List:

ⓘ Coesite (TL)
Formula: SiO2
Type Locality:
Description: Abundant constituent of sheared Coconino Sandstone in debris directly below crater floor & beyond the crater rim & in breccia deep below the crater floor & in lechatelierite in waterlain beds within the crater; irregular grains 5 to more than 50 microns.
ⓘ Lechatelierite
Formula: SiO2
Description: Results from the fusion of fine-grained Coconino Sandstone.
ⓘ Maghemite
Formula: (Fe3+0.67◻0.33)Fe3+2O4
Description: Occurs as elongate, isotropic grains alternating with a goethite-like iron oxide as a minor component of tiny metallic spheroids probably formed from the meteorite impact.
ⓘ Quartz
Formula: SiO2
ⓘ Schreibersite
Formula: (Fe,Ni)3P
Description: Occurs in tiny spheroids probably formed from the meteorite impact.
ⓘ Stishovite (TL)
Formula: SiO2
Type Locality:
Description: Occurs in shock-impact metamorphosed Coconino Sandstone with coesite.
References:
ⓘ Troilite
Formula: FeS
Description: Occurs in tiny spheroids probably formed from the meteorite impact.
