Solfatara di Lร tera, Lร tera volcano, Viterbo, Lazio, Italia

This solfatara near Lร tera village (1.5 km SW from it) belongs to the volcanic complex of Lร tera caldera, which embraces part of Latium region (the main complex lays in this region) and part of Tuscany.

The products of Latera volcano, which include ignimbrite units, layered tuffs, lavas and cinder cones, occupy the whole of the western flank of Vulsini and are distributed around a caldera of 6 x 7 km. Latera plateau consists of at least 8 kmยณ of tuffs exposed outside the caldera, while a further 7 kmยณ of intra-caldera tuffs have been revealed by drilling (Barberi et al. 1984; Turbeville 1993).
