Ordinary Low Iron Chondrite (L6?)
Fell, 5 November 1932; 2.125 kg

A single stone was observed to fall. A fresh surface reveals both chondrules and flecks of metal and sulfide visible to the naked eye. Under the microscope silicates are prominent — olivine is most abundant in both porphyritic chondrules and in the ground mass. Pyroxene is present as well, but in lesser quantities while most (or all?) of the original plagioclase has been converted to glass. Both Fe-Ni metal and troilite are also found — frequently in association with each other. Other minor accessory phases include chromite, with attendant ilmenite, and merrillite.

Prambachkirchen was listed as a hypersthene-olivine (L6) chondrite in the Catalogue of Meteorites (4/e) of 1985 and has since been listed simply an 'L6 ordinary chondrite' both in the Catalogue of Meteorites (4/e) of 2000 and at the current Meteoritical Bulletin Database (Jan. 2016). However, the only extensive study of Prambachkirchen, Schadler & Rosenhagen (1933), reported abundant glass and significant clinopyroxene ('Klinohypersthen') more characteristic of L4 chondrites. Unfortunately, the only holding listed in the last two editions of the Catalogue of Meteorites is a small 22 g fragment(s) at the Naturhistorisches Museum (NHM)in Vienna. This might prevent a proper determination of Prambachkirchen's proper classification.
