Before it was flooded by irrigation run-off in 1972, this shallow clay-filled depression, approximately 15 hectares in area, was covered by water only after heavy rain. In the northern and central sections of the depression, mining operations between 1950 and 1956 had exposed a large bed of coarsely crystalline selenite. The twinned and multiple twinned crystals on b {101} showed the forms b {010}, m {110} and l {111}. They were up to 30 or more cm in length and grew closely parallel to each other in powdery gypsum and clay, pointing downwards and lying just below the surface of the playa. They were coloured cloudy to grey by inclusions of mud. Crystals exposed for a long period of time at the surface showed corrosion of the {111} faces, sometimes to the extent of complete removal, and were often coated with a deposit of secondary brown gypsum. It is unlikely that any specimens have been collected from the site since 1972.
