Salt mine that exploited a rocksalt deposit in various periods over a long time span from about 600 BCE to modern times, particularly during four longer periods: Achaemenian, Sassanian, Seljuk and Safavid to Pahlavi periods in the 20th century.
A number of mining accidents have occurred with the bodies of the miners being mummified by the salt.
