Classic locality for the "simetite" variety of amber (of Miocene age), located along the east coast of Sicily to the south of Catania.

The classic finds are reported from shallow waters and beaches, where simetite has been washed up, especially after autumn or winter storms that agitated the seabeds. According to Bombicci (1890), simetite was also found in marl beds along the banks and near the mouth of the Simeto River (this area is also known by the local name of Giarretta).

For more information on Sicilian amber, see http://www.mindat.org/loc-14444.html.
