Howardite
Fell 2 Aug 1882; 2 kg

The Pavlovka Meteorite is a single stone that fell, after detonations, near a village of Pavlovka. Its primary constituents are variable orthopyroxenes (Diogenitic) accompanied by pigeonite and anorthitic plagioclase (Eucritic). This is more or less expected as Howardites are brecciated achondrites predominantly composed of various mixtures of Eucritic and Diogenitic components. Pavlovka is, however, distinguished from other Howardites by a compositional diversity unusual even for a Howardite. It is also distinguished from some Howardites by ferroan silicates and a minor, but quite diverse suite of olivines. Chondritic material and minor opaques (e.g., chromite and ilmenite) are also reported. In sum, Pavlovka appears to be a melange of small and unusually diverse igneous clasts which were packed together very quickly โ€” perhaps during the very moments when its constituents were being launched into space during a catastrophic impact.

The recent DAWN Spacecraft Mission to Vesta has made it very clear that most or even almost all of the HED meteorites (Howardites-Eucrites-Diogenites) such as Pavlovka are fragments of the brightest and nearest large asteroid, 4 Vesta. However, high resolution O-isotope and other studies have also made it clear that some small, but currently unknown number of HED meteorites are derived from other presently unidentified asteroids. Final determination of Original Parent Bodies for specific HED meteorites such as Pavlovka remains a work in progress.
