Ancient (mainly Etruscan) and Medieval iron and Pb-Cu slags in the surroundings of the lake. The ancient and Medieval slags are overlapped by more recent iron slags, originated by a kiln and two ironworks built during the rule of the Grand Duke of Tuscany (La Pesta and Accesa localities).

The lake lies between three main geological formations: Permian schist to the east and north-north-east, highly karstified Rhaetian dolomitic limestone to the west and north-west, and Eocene clayey schist to the south and west. A large Pleistocene detritic cone covers the Permian schist to the east of the lake. The depth of the lake is 39 m, its surface area about 16 ha, its catchment area covers ca. 5 km2 and the lake is of karstic origin. It is fed to the west by a sub-aquatic thermal spring (called "L'inferno") and its outlet to the east marks the beginning of the Bruna stream. The water of the lake was used to wash ores coming from Elba Island, from the copper mines of Montecatini and Montecastelli (Cecina valley) and the nearby mines of Serrabottini and Fenice Capanne (Repetti, 1833, cited in Rizzotto, 1982). Also, alum was treated here. In 1926, during the First National Etruscan Conference, an excursion to the site was organized and the visitors were able to notice large amounts of slags of the ancient metallurgical activities.
