von Knorring, Sahama & Lehtinen (1969) published data on kornerupine found in 2 samples of a highly metamorphic gneiss said to come from "Inanakafy near Betroka, Madagascar". "Inanakafy" is most probably a misspelling and refers to the small village and commune centre of Ianakafy situated about 90 km along a dirt road West of Betroka.

Detailed Mineral List:

โ“˜ Cordierite
Formula: (Mg,Fe)2Al3(AlSi5O18)
Habit: oval-shaped monomineralic aggregates
Colour: slightly bluish
Description: a very Mg-rich variety with ca. 7 mol. % of the iron component
โ“˜ Kornerupine
Formula: Mg3Al6(Si,Al,B)5O21(OH)
Habit: prismatic crystals up to 3-4cm long and 1cm thick. The prisms show the faces {100}, {010} and {110}. End faces are extremely rare and poorly developed. Only {111} could be identified.
โ“˜ 'Orthopyroxene Subgroup'
Habit: euhedral to subhedral crystals characterized by the pyramidal faces {211}. Faces {101} not visible.
Colour: brownish
Description: The mineral represents a bronzite with (Fe, Mn): Mg = 15:85 and with Al largely substituting for Si.
โ“˜ Phlogopite
Formula: KMg3(AlSi3O10)(OH)2
Habit: mostly anhedral flakes up to 1cm, sometimes showing prismatic faces and, very rarely, showing poorly developed pyramidal faces.
Colour: black
โ“˜ 'Plagioclase'
Formula: (Na,Ca)[(Si,Al)AlSi2]O8
โ“˜ Sapphirine
Formula: Mg4(Mg3Al9)O4[Si3Al9O36]
Colour: slightly greenish blue
โ“˜ Spinel
Formula: MgAl2O4
Colour: blue
Description: pure MgAl-spinel
โ“˜ 'Tourmaline'
Formula: AD3G6 (T6O18)(BO3)3X3Z
Colour: black
โ“˜ Zircon
Formula: Zr(SiO4)
Habit: euhedral crystals
