Other/historical names associated with this locality:
Mt Garnet Mine; Mount Garnet zinc deposit; Kagara Zinc Mine; Noble Mine
The Mount Garnet Mine was first mined by the Mount Garnet Freehold Copper and Silver Mining Co. Ltd, and was part of the John Moffatt mining โempireโ.
Mining was of secondary copper in 1898 and then smelting copper ore in 1901.
Copper was initially mined from two main pits, the No. 1 Pit developed on the South Shoot, and the smaller No. 2 Pit developed on the North Shoot. Underground development extended to a depth of 73 metres with limited stoping.
The copper ores were exhausted by 1902.
Kagara Limited (Kagara) acquired the mine in 1997 and commenced mining in 2002 and developed the open pit and underground mine.
The mine was placed in care and maintenance in 2012. Snow Peak Mining purchased the Mt Garnet Mine in January 2013.
An open-cut operating copper and zinc mine.
Access is highly restricted.
A proposed five-stage paragenetic sequence includes: (I) prograde skarn (including Grt IA and Grt IB); (II) granular skarn (including Grt IB), (III) wrigglite skarn, (IV) hydrous alteration (including Grt II), and (V) minor alteration.
