Pro Football Reference is continuing to roll out new information on game-level participation and starters and now has this data all the way back to 1930. This also allows us to expand our Player Streak Finder and Player Span Finder tools in Stathead all the way back to 1933 (the first season for which we have game-level player yardage and attempt totals for passing, rushing and receiving). We hope to add the 1920s in the near future. We would like to thank Tod Maher for his work in compiling this dataset.

After adding the 1960s two weeks ago, Pro Football Reference is proud to announce that we have added starting lineups and participation data for the entire decades of the 1940s and 1950s, for both the NFL and AAFC (which ran from 1946-49). For players who had offensive stats or interceptions, we already knew if they played or not. But given that we do not have game-level tackles in this era, most players who participated in these games did not have any stats in our database. Pro Football Reference is proud to announce that we have added starting lineups and participation data for the entire decade of the 1960s, for both the NFL and AFL. Before this update, we had this coverage for the entire post-merger era (since 1970), but this update adds a decade to the coverage. For players who had offensive/special teams stats or interceptions, we already knew if they played or not. But given that we do not have game-level tackles in this era, most players who participated in these games did not have any stats in our database. We would also like to note the slight caveat that ~5% of non-starters are missing from the data. A couple of months ago we added 16 new seasons worth of NFL play-by-play thanks to the efforts of Aaron Schatz and Jeremy Snyder. At the time, we teased that further enhancements would be coming. Today, we're thrilled to announce that these enhancements can now be found on Pro Football Reference and Stathead. We have added 21 new seasons of season-and-game-level forced fumbles coverage (now extending back to 1978), nine new seasons of game-level fumble recovery coverage (now extending back to 1978) and five new seasons of game-level solo, assisted and combined tackles coverage (now extending back to 1994). Additionally, we have made small improvements to our play-by-play and targets totals by adding targets on interceptions that were initially left out of the official play-by-play (we have also added many targets on DPIs to our play-by-play, though these don't count as targets since they're not officially plays).

We are thrilled to announce that we have added five new seasons of box scores to College Football Reference. We now have a box score with scoring details, team stats and player passing/rushing/receiving stats for every FBS (I-A, at the time) game from 1995 to 1999. For instance, here's the box score for the 1996 Fiesta Bowl, which led to Nebraska's second consecutive national championship. Previously, our coverage was restricted to 2000 to the present. With this new update, we now have statistics for every game of Tom Brady's career, every game of Drew Brees's career, and almost every game of Peyton Manning's career (which began in 1994). The additional information also means we can calculate player and team splits for an additional five seasons. What defense could never get off the field on 3rd down in the late '70s? No? Well, we're happy to announce that we've got answers for you anyways! We are thrilled to announce that Pro Football Reference now has play-by-play and related statistics/splits for all regular-season and playoffs games (with the exception of four minutes and 47 seconds of a single game) all the way back to 1978, which was the first season of the NFL's 16-game schedule era. This sort of comprehensive, digitized play-by-play is not available anywhere else in the public realm. We are very proud to be able to democratize this data and present it to our users.

With the 2024 regular season concluded and All-Pro voting released, we're pleased to report that we've added 2024 Approximate Value (AV) numbers to the site for all NFL players. Note that these numbers are considered provisional at the moment, as there may be some slight adjustments based on replacement Pro Bowl selections.

Lamar Jackson leads 2024 players with 21 AV, with Josh Allen and Jayden Daniels just behind at 20. The top non-QBs in AV this season are Penei Sewell, Saquon Barkley, Tristan Wirfs and Zack Baun. You can see all of the top players in this Stathead.com Player Season Finder search.
