WalkthroughThe operator API adds optional role replica counts for v1alpha1 and v1beta1. Admission defaulting, validation, conversion, runtime expansion, CRD schemas, tests, and Kubernetes API documentation now support multinode leader and worker replica counts. ChangesMultinode role replicas
Priority: β¬οΈ Low Estimated code review effort: 4 (Complex) | ~45 minutes Merge Risk: π΅ Low Β· up to This change adds optional role replica counts while preserving the fixed multinode leader/worker layout. Runtime and admission behavior are covered, but published documentation can still describe invalid configurations and one defaulting test can miss an absent role; these are bounded follow-up risks. π₯ Pre-merge checks | β 4 | β 1β Failed checks (1 warning)

- Line 167: Update the documentation describing the multinode layout to state
that the leader role must have exactly one replica and the worker role must have
exactly multinode.nodeCount minus one replicas, rather than only requiring their
sum to equal multinode.nodeCount.
In
`@deploy/operator/internal/webhook/validation/dynamographdeployment_validation_envtest_test.go`:
- Around line 2872-2881: Update the role replica assertion around
component.Roles to build an actual name-to-replica map from the admission
result, then compare it against wantRoleReplicas so every expected role,
including missing leader or worker entries, is detected while preserving
replica-value validation.
In

docs/fern/pages/reference/kubernetes-api/full-api-reference.mdx:468-468 and
:635-635, to require explicit roles to resolve to exactly leader: 1 and worker:
multinode.nodeCount - 1; remove the wording that permits arbitrary counts whose
sum equals nodeCount.
In `@docs/fern/scripts/tests/test_gen_kubernetes_api.py`:
- Around line 401-404: Replace the assertion checking dcd_roles.description in
the Kubernetes API generation test with an explicit if condition that raises
AssertionError with a clear failure message when the expected text is absent;
preserve the existing validation behavior.

Context
This is an additive follow-up to #14419. That PR introduced named component roles while deliberately leaving role cardinality out of the 1.5/backport foundation.
Some compound component types need explicit role cardinalities. This PR adds the shared
roles[].replicassurface while defining behavior only for the role schema implemented today: multinodeleaderandworkerroles.API change
The three replica dimensions remain distinct:
The existing implicit form remains valid and unchanged:
Each component instance has one leader and seven workers. Roles may expose that structure without repeating its fixed cardinality:
Admission persists the resolved values:
An explicitly authored value cannot redefine the multinode shape:
Authority, defaulting, and validation
multinode.nodeCountremains the authoritative multinode shape and becomes immutable after creation for embedded DGD components and standalone DCDs.roles[].replicasis optional on input and has a minimum of 1 when present.leader = 1andworker = multinode.nodeCount - 1for an explicit multinode role list. Explicit values must equal those fixed values.nodeCount; it does not consume the assertion. This keeps rendering deterministic even if an invalid object bypasses admission.component.replicasremains the scale target and counts complete component instances. Multinode roles are not independently scalable.matchPolicy: Equivalent, so DGD and standalone DCD requests receive the same defaults without a separate v1alpha1 defaulter.Making
nodeCountimmutable is the compatibility tradeoff that makes persisted role defaults safe. Otherwise a previously defaulted worker count would become stale whennodeCountchanges, and a node-count-only update would require an atomic edit of a newly introduced field. Existing resources remain valid, but callers that previously changednodeCountin place must now recreate the component or graph deployment to change the multinode shape. For example, this update is rejected even if the role assertions move with it:
Migration and rollout behavior
rolespreserves the existing implicit multinode layout.providerOverride. Persisting the defaults therefore does not trigger a rollout by itself.multinode.nodeCountupdates are rejected, including an otherwise internally consistent update of bothnodeCountandroles[].replicas.Implementation
