WalkthroughThe SGLang frontend now recognizes structured JSON response formats when determining reasoning requirements. It propagates structured JSON fallback state through inline and worker paths. Hi @cmdy, thanks for raising this. Can you respond to the comments from @vladnosiv and discuss in the slack: https://ai-dynamo.slack.com/archives/C0BEYM9L676/p1788879214846159?thread_ts=1788861709.529599&cid=C0BEYM9L676? |
Thanks for following up. Iβm currently validating the generation-side fix with --enable-strict-thinking, without the JSON post-processing fallback. Once validation is complete, Iβll respond to @vladnosiv in the Slack thread and discuss the results and next steps. |

Overview:
Fix structured-output generation with reasoning enabled in the SGLang chat processor (
--dyn-chat-processor sglang). In the reported DeepSeek-V4 PD deployment, structured JSON was returned entirely in
reasoning_content, leavingcontentempty. This PR extends the existing generation-siderequire_reasoninggate to structured response formats when effective thinking is enabled.Following review feedback, this revision removes the proposed structured-output JSON reclassification fallback. Valid JSON inside reasoning is not necessarily a final answer. The streaming postprocessor, including existing required/named tool-call handling, remains unchanged from the PR base.
Details:
separate_reasoning.gpt_ossstructured-response exception, and existing required/named tool-call behavior.Validation
Deployment comparison
Performed a gate-enabled β gate-disabled β gate-enabled comparison on a DeepSeek-V4-Flash-0731 SGLang PD deployment, without the new structured-output JSON fallback.
Only the frontend variant was switched; worker configuration remained unchanged. Both workers had the native DeepSeek-V4 reasoning parser and strict thinking enabled. The supplied resolved startup logs showed
xgrammar. The frontend used the SGLang chat processor and DeepSeek-V4 reasoning parser. These are client-visible observations from this deployment, not an all-model or all-backend validation. No raw engine token trace or strict-thinking-disabled comparison was collected.
