Description

Dropped items

  • merge diffrent stacks (before: only equal counts merged, e.g. 1+5 cobble stayed apart)
  • merge while falling
  • named / enchanted / custom-NBT items stay apart, tools never stack
  • small bounce on landing + ice sliding fixed (double friction before)
  • burn in fire, die in the void, use portals (-> base entity tick)
  • Bedrock shows the new stack count after a merge or pickup

Item damage

  • nether star survives TNT, netherite survives lava after a chunk reload
  • shulker box / bundle spills its contents when destroyed (lava, cactus, TNT, lightning)
  • mobGriefing off: only mobs can't destroy items
  • plugins: EntityDamageEvent for items

Damage tags (datapack-driven, all entities)

  • invulnerability, fire, fall: #bypasses_invulnerability, #is_fire, #is_fall
  • fire-immune mobs (blaze, zombified piglin) also ignore fireballs
  • lightning (damage items and burn up)
  • witch: #witch_resistant_to (resists sonic boom, no longer wither)
  • armor stand: vanilla tags; dispenser arrows break it with mobGriefing off

Not included: lightning conversions (pig, villager), drop positions (follow-up)

Testing

gametesting
cargo clippy --release

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Dropped items now merge with compatible nearby stacks, follow updated movement and bouncing behavior, and preserve pickup delays when merging.
    • Destroyed container and bundle items spill their contents.
    • Lightning now sets fire to and damages entities beyond living creatures.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Item damage now respects damage resistance and invulnerability rules, and item stack changes update client-visible counts.
    • Fire and lava interactions now consistently respect entity fire immunity; burning damage is skipped while an entity touches lava.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The changes centralize entity fire-immunity and invulnerability checks, update damage handling and fluid callbacks, and revise item merging, ticking, movement, and damage behavior. The typo checker now allows areMergable and isMergable.

Changes

Entity behavior

Layer / File(s) Summary
Shared fire and invulnerability checks
crates/pumpkin-core/src/entity/mod.rs, crates/pumpkin-core/src/block/blocks/fire/mod.rs, crates/pumpkin-core/src/block/blocks/magma.rs, crates/pumpkin-core/src/block/fluid/lava.rs
Entity fire immunity now combines entity-type and instance immunity. Invulnerability checks accept an optional damage cause. Fire-related block collisions use the shared immunity check. Lightning affects all entities, and periodic burning damage is skipped while touching lava.
Fluid scan and collision callbacks
crates/pumpkin-core/src/entity/mod.rs
Fluid scanning returns encountered fluids. The fluid-state update invokes their collision callbacks after the scan.
Damage-type tag consumers
crates/pumpkin-core/src/entity/decoration/armor_stand.rs, crates/pumpkin-core/src/entity/living.rs, crates/pumpkin-core/src/entity/mob/witch.rs
Armor-stand damage rules and witch damage reduction use damage-type tags. Living-entity damage passes its cause to the invulnerability check.
Item resistance and merge eligibility
crates/pumpkin-core/src/entity/item.rs
Item resistance determines damage handling and cached fire immunity. Merge eligibility checks matching components and stack limits. Tests cover merging and damage resistance.
Item merging and stack synchronization
crates/pumpkin-core/src/entity/item.rs
Neighbor merging uses shared eligibility checks, caps transfers, updates target pickup delay and age, and synchronizes stack count changes.
Item ticking and movement
crates/pumpkin-core/src/entity/item.rs
Item ticking delegates to the base entity tick. Movement cadence, friction, landing velocity, despawn timing, merge timing, and fluid synchronization are updated.
Item damage and destruction
crates/pumpkin-core/src/entity/item.rs
Item damage checks invulnerability, mob-griefing rules, and component resistance, then fires a cancellable event. Destruction spills non-empty container and bundle contents.

Container destruction can race with pickup, allowing a player to retain a filled container while its contents also spill into the world. This affects item and inventory integrity within a game world; no server-privilege gain is demonstrated.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: New container spilling is not mutually exclusive with pickup. Pickup clones the filled stack, releases its lock while inserting that clone into inventory, and later overwrites the entity stack. Concurrent lethal damage can meanwhile clear the original container components and spawn their contents. With item and TNT processing in different parallel batches, the player can receive the intact container and the spilled contents can also survive. The pickup sequence already existed, but base destruction only removed the entity; this PR adds the second copy-producing ownership path. Health CAS and idempotent removal do not serialize these competing transfers.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The retained ownership concern affects container contents transferred into player inventory and newly spawned item entities in the same world. It requires a susceptible filled container, available inventory space, permitted lethal damage and overlapping execution. Repetition could inflate gameplay asset quantities; no administrative privilege gain or cross-service compromise is established.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A player permitted to ignite TNT can encounter the following ownership race: pickup clones a filled container; an explosion in another entity batch lethally damages the original and spills its contents; pickup inserts the earlier clone into inventory and completes its overwrite. The spill and the retained container then both own copies of the contents. Base had the unlocked pickup sequence but no destruction spill, so the specific duplicate-content outcome is newly introduced. Runtime exploit reliability has not been measured.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Item damage cancellation prevents health mutation, and world spawning explicitly permits plugins to cancel a spill entity's creation. Container contents are cleared before those spawn callbacks, and rejected spawns are not restored. This is an observable cancellation outcome, not evidence that an untrusted player gains plugin authority. Lightning ignition precedes damage cancellation, as it already did for living entities in base.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — The lifecycle's protection is operation-specific: merge reservations, atomic health and idempotent removal each prevent particular repeated transitions, but there is no common ownership claim spanning pickup and container destruction. Consequently, individually protected operations can still violate asset conservation when composed.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Use a shared per-item lifecycle reservation or equivalent ownership transition for pickup and terminal destruction, so only one operation can consume the container contents. Preserve callback execution outside stack mutexes and the ordered merge-lock discipline rather than extending a mutex across plugin callbacks.

@coderabbitai Vanilla also refuses to merge dropped-item stacks when only a partial transfer would fit, and Pumpkin matches that. Your merge risk is false positive

@zinedinp, you’re right. ItemEntity::are_mergeable rejects a merge when the combined count exceeds the maximum stack size. The transfer path checks this guard before moving items.

Rejecting a merge when only a partial transfer fits matches vanilla behavior. My merge-risk finding was a false positive, so I withdraw it. Thanks for the clarification.

Learning: In crates/pumpkin/src/entity/item.rs, ItemEntity::are_mergeable intentionally rejects dropped-item merges when the combined count exceeds the maximum stack size. Vanilla also rejects these merges rather than transferring only the amount that fits. Do not flag this guard as a missing partial-transfer behavior.

Merged with fork implementation: the fork's plugin Item.onDestroyed hook is renamed
on_destroyed_by_plugin and runs next to upstream's container spill when the item dies.
(cherry picked from commit 944c36d)

Partial (1.21.1): dropped the mobGriefing checks in ItemEntity and ArmorStand damage (not for 1.21.1; its ItemEntity.hurt and ArmorStand.hurt have none). Damage-type tags come from 1.21.1 data, so the armor stand and witch rules match 1.21.1; the nether star's explosion and netherite's fire resistance come from this branch's damage_resistant data, like 1.21.1's hardcoded checks.
